Christian Persecution

Erledigaeth Cristnogion

Persecution of Christians

Specification: Unit 1 Option A: Christianity and Catholic Christianity – Core Beliefs, Teachings and Practices: Persecution of Christians in the modern world.

At a Glance: In the United Kingdom, the religion with the largest majority is Christianity. It may be surprising to learn that Christians are the most persecuted religious group worldwide.

This is partly because there are many regions in the world where Christians are a minority and minorities of all sorts can be too easily blamed for issues that concern the majority.

Exam questions in this area may ask you to describe how, or explain why, Christians are persecuted today.

There could also be a question that asks you to discuss and evaluate an aspect of Christian persecution.

Manyleb: Uned 1 Opsiwn A: Cristnogaeth a Christnogaeth Gatholig – Credoau, Dysgeidiaethau ac Arferion Craidd: Erlid Cristnogion yn y byd modern.

Yn Gryno: Yn y Deyrnas Unedig, Cristnogaeth yw'r grefydd â'r mwyafrif mwyaf o ddilynwyr. Efallai y bydd yn syndod dysgu mai Cristnogion yw'r grŵp crefyddol a gaiff ei erlid fwyaf ledled y byd.

Mae hyn yn rhannol gan fod Cristnogion yn lleiafrif mewn sawl rhan o'r byd, a gall fod yn rhy hawdd beio lleiafrifoedd o bob math am faterion sy'n ymwneud â'r mwyafrif.

Mae'n bosibl y bydd cwestiynau arholiad yn y maes hwn yn gofyn i chi ddisgrifio sut y caiff Cristnogion eu herlid heddiw, neu esbonio pam mae hynny'n digwydd.

Gellid gofyn i chi hefyd drafod a gwerthuso agwedd ar erledigaeth Cristnogion.

Read the passage below and then take the quiz:

On April 9 [2017], which was Palm Sunday and the start of the Holy Week, two Egyptian Coptic churches became a target for terrorists. At least 27 people were killed in the explosion at St. George’s Coptic church in Tanta [Egypt] and 17 people lost their lives in St Mark’s Coptic church in Alexandria [Egypt]. Over a hundred people were injured in both attacks. A few hours after the attacks, Daesh [Islamic State] claimed responsibility for the unleashed terror.

Christians are the most persecuted religious group in the world. Research published in August 2011 by Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life revealed that Christians were harassed in 130 countries (between mid-2006 and mid-2009). In 104 countries, the harassment was conducted by governments and organisations, and in 100 countries, by social groups and individuals. The harassment of Christians was the highest in the Middle East and North Africa (90 percent of countries).

Darllenwch y darn isod ac wedyn atebwch y cwis:

Ar 9 Ebrill [2017], sef Sul y Blodau a dechrau Wythnos y Pasg, bu dwy eglwys Goptaidd yn yr Aifft yn darged i derfysgwyr. Lladdwyd o leiaf 27 o bobl yn y ffrwydriad yn Eglwys Goptaidd San Siôr yn Tanta a chollodd 17 o bobl eu bywydau yn Eglwys Goptaidd Sant Marc yn Alexandria [y ddwy yn yr Aifft]. Anafwyd dros gant o bobl yn y ddau ymosodiad. Ychydig oriau wedi'r ymosodiadau, hawliodd Daesh [Y Wladwriaeth Islamaidd] gyfrifoldeb am y digwyddiadau brawychus.

Cristnogion yw'r grŵp crefyddol a gaiff ei erlid fwyaf yn y byd. Yn ôl gwaith ymchwil a gyhoeddwyd ym mis Awst 2011 gan Fforwm ar Grefydd a Bywyd Cyhoeddus Canolfan Ymchwil Pew, roedd Cristnogion yn destun aflonyddu mewn 130 o wledydd (rhwng canol 2006 a chanol 2009). Llywodraethau a sefydliadau oedd yn gyfrifol am yr aflonyddu mewn 104 o wledydd, a grwpiau cymdeithasol ac unigolion oedd yn gyfrifol amdano mewn 100 o wledydd. Roedd achosion o aflonyddu ar Gristnogion yn fwyaf cyffredin yn y Dwyrain Canol a Gogledd Affrica (90 y cant o wledydd).

Task: Research two other recent examples of the persecution of Christians in the world.

Tasg: Ymchwiliwch i ddwy enghraifft ddiweddar arall o Gristnogion yn cael eu herlid yn y byd.

        Source of wisdom: The Bible

        Ffynhonnell o ddoethineb: Y Beibl

        Open bible on a table

What the Bible says about the persecution of Christians:

…and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. (Matthew 10:22)

TIP: You don’t have to remember Bible passages and other quotes word for word. You can paraphrase them – this means putting them in your own words, without losing the meaning of the original quote.

Insight: Jesus does not hide the harsh reality that might come with being his follower, but he also shares a reason why people might still want to follow him despite the persecution: salvation.

Look up this word (‘salvation’) in a dictionary to more fully understand what Jesus is saying and write the definition here:

Yr hyn y mae'r Beibl yn ei ddweud am erledigaeth Cristnogion:

A chas fyddwch gan bawb o achos fy enw i; ond y sawl sy'n dyfalbarhau i'r diwedd a gaiff ei achub. (Mathew 10:22)

AWGRYM: Nid oes angen i chi gofio rhannau o'r Beibl a dyfyniadau eraill air am air. Gallwch eu haralleirio, sef eu hysgrifennu yn eich geiriau eich hun, heb golli ystyr y dyfyniad gwreiddiol.

Cipolwg: Nid yw Iesu yn celu'r realiti anodd a allai fod ynghlwm wrth fod yn ddilynwr iddo, ond mae hefyd yn rhannu rheswm pam y gallai pobl fod am ei ddilyn o hyd er gwaethaf yr erledigaeth: iachawdwriaeth.

Chwiliwch am y gair hwn ('iachawdwriaeth') mewn geiriadur er mwyn cael dealltwriaeth well o'r hyn y mae Iesu yn ei ddweud ac ysgrifennwch y diffiniad yma:

Suggested answer: Salvation means being free of sin and spiritual death. (Note that this is one of many definitions that will help you to explain why Christians may stay faithful in the face of persecution – they are hoping that doing so will help them to be saved, free of sin and spiritual death).

Ateb awgrymedig: Ystyr iachawdwriaeth yw bod yn rhydd rhag pechod a marwolaeth ysbrydol. (Dyma un o blith nifer o ddiffiniadau a fydd yn eich helpu i esbonio pam y bydd Cristnogion efallai yn parhau i fod yn ffyddlon yn wyneb erledigaeth – drwy wneud hynny, maent yn gobeithio y cânt eu hachub ac y byddant yn rhydd rhag pechod a marwolaeth ysbrydol).

        Going for Gold

        Anelu am Aur

        Demonstration

In Matthew 10, Jesus lists three sources of persecution:

        1. From governments.
        2. From other religions.
        3. From friends and families.

But if Christianity is a religion of love, why are Christians persecuted? Maybe the answer is closer to us than we think. Here in Britain there have been instances of religious persecution; for example, graffiti left on synagogues and violence against some Muslims who themselves have nothing to do with violence.

Research an example of a recent attack on the British Jewish community and an example of a recent attack on the British Muslim community.

Why do people persecute other people?

        • Those who follow a religion follow a different set of rules than those who do not – this can feel threatening to some governments. Write out 3 examples of such rules.
        • Some societies feel comfortable when everyone shares the same beliefs and practices therefore those with different beliefs are seen as ‘wrong’ and ‘threatening’.
        • Families and friendship groups are held together by beliefs and traditions, even if these are not always stated. To depart from these can be perceived as a ‘slap in the face’ and a betrayal of family honour and values.

Yn Mathew 10, mae Iesu yn rhestru tair ffynhonnell o erledigaeth:

        1. Llywodraethau.
        2. Crefyddau eraill.
        3. Ffrindiau a theuluoedd.

Ond os yw Cristnogaeth yn grefydd sy'n hyrwyddo cariad, pam mae Cristnogion yn cael eu herlid? Efallai fod yr ateb yn agosach atom nag y credwn. Yma ym Mhrydain, gwelwyd achosion o erledigaeth grefyddol; er enghraifft, graffiti yn cael ei adael ar synagogau a thrais yn erbyn rhai Mwslimiaid nad oes ganddyn nhw ddim byd i'w wneud â thrais.

Ymchwiliwch i enghraifft o ymosodiad diweddar ar y gymuned Iddewig ym Mhrydain ac enghraifft o ymosodiad diweddar ar y gymuned Fwslimaidd ym Mhrydain.

Pam mae pobl yn erlid pobl eraill?

        • Mae'r rhai sy'n arddel crefydd yn dilyn cyfres wahanol o reolau i'r rhai nad ydynt yn arddel crefydd – gall hyn wneud i rai llywodraethau deimlo o dan fygythiad. Ysgrifennwch 3 enghraifft o reolau o'r fath.
        • Mae rhai cymdeithasau'n teimlo'n gyfforddus pan fydd pawb yn rhannu'r un credoau ac arferion, felly mae'r rhai sydd â chredoau gwahanol yn cael eu hystyried yn ‘ddrwg’ ac yn ‘fygythiol’.
        • Caiff teuluoedd a grwpiau cyfeillgarwch eu cynnal gan gredoau a thraddodiadau, hyd yn oed os nad ydynt yn cael eu nodi bob amser. Os bydd rhywun yn gwyro oddi arnynt, gellir ystyried ei fod yn ymddwyn yn sarhaus, yn bradychu gwerthoedd y teulu ac yn dangos amharch tuag at ei deulu.

        (c) Explain why Christians continue with their faith even though they could be persecuted. [8]

Mae’r ateb isod yn 8 brawddeg o hyd. Fodd bynnag, mae 4 o'r brawddegau yn berthnasol i'r cwestiwn ac mae un yn berthnasol fel cyflwyniad. Nid yw'r 3 arall yn berthnasol. Eich tasg chi yw nodi'r 3 brawddeg amherthnasol. Defnyddiwch yr adnodd golygu testun i ddileu'r brawddegau amherthnasol.

        (c) Esboniwch pam mae Cristnogion yn parhau i arddel eu ffydd er gwaethaf y posibilrwydd y gallent gael eu herlid. [8]

        1. If you are living in a place where Christianity is a religious minority you might see signs of persecution – in Egypt, for example. 2. This is because it is hard to be a Christian – you have to attend worship services and read the Bible all day long. 3. This is the reason for so many people (especially today’s youth) leaving the church – you really stand out like a sore thumb if you are a Christian. 4. So, many people simply do not continue with their faith. 5. Those who do continue to practice their faith when it is hard to do so because they hope to be rewarded in heaven. 6. After all, Jesus said that those who endure persecution will be saved (Matthew 10). 7. This proves that many Christians are really deluded and that ministers use beliefs about the afterlife to get people to stay faithful and keep giving money to the church. 8. Another reason for faithfulness in persecution is that Christians feel that Jesus is present with them in a special way at these times.

Out of a possible total of 8 marks that can be earned for this question, how many marks would you give this? Look at the marking bands for a (c) question and remember that (c) questions must explain.

Allan o gyfanswm posibl o 8 marc ar gyfer y cwestiwn hwn, sawl marc y byddech chi'n ei roi i hwn? Edrychwch ar y bandiau marcio ar gyfer cwestiwn (c) a chofiwch fod angen i gwestiynau (c) gynnig esboniad.

Another reason for faithfulness in persecution is that Christians feel that Jesus is present with them in a special way at these times. [4 marks]

We have judged this answer to be a level 2, 4 marks.

Explanation: if you remove the 4 irrelevant sentences you are left with an answer which displays:

        • Knowledge: Christians are persecuted in places where they are a minority, such as Egypt.
        • Influence: There is a hope for reward in heaven.
        • Sources: Matthew 10 is referred to accurately.

What is missing? There is another accurate suggestion in sentence 8 as to why Christians may be faithful, but this is not developed. More specialist language could have been used (see section 1) and more knowledge could have been used to explain how Christians might find encouragement to be faithful (Bible reading, prayer, support from other Christians/Christian organisations).

        1. Os ydych yn byw rhywle lle mae Cristnogaeth yn grefydd leiafrifol, efallai y gwelwch arwyddion o erledigaeth, er enghraifft yn yr Aifft. 5. Mae'r rhai sy'n parhau i arddel eu ffydd mewn gair a gweithred pan fo hynny'n anodd yn gwneud hynny am eu bod yn gobeithio y byddant yn cael eu gwobrwyo yn y nefoedd. 6. Wedi'r cwbl, dywedodd Iesu y byddai'r rhai sy'n sefyll yn gadarn yn erbyn erledigaeth yn cael eu hachub (Mathew 10). 8. Rheswm arall dros ffyddlondeb yn wyneb erledigaeth yw bod Cristnogion yn teimlo bod Iesu yno gyda nhw mewn ffordd arbennig ar yr adegau hyn. [4 marc]

Rydym wedi penderfynu bod hwn yn ateb lefel 2 sy'n werth 4 marc.

Esboniad: os caiff y 4 brawddeg amherthnasol eu dileu, yr hyn sydd ar ôl yw ateb sy'n dangos y canlynol:

        • Gwybodaeth: caiff Cristnogion eu herlid mewn lleoedd lle maent yn lleiafrif, fel yr Aifft.
        • Dylanwad: mae gobaith am wobr yn y nefoedd.
        • Ffynonellau: mae cyfeiriad cywir at Mathew 10.

Beth sydd ar goll? Mae awgrym cywir arall ym mrawddeg 8 ynghylch pam y gall Cristnogion fod yn ffyddlon, ond ni chaiff ei ddatblygu. Gellid bod wedi defnyddio iaith fwy arbenigol (gweler adran 1) a rhagor o wybodaeth i esbonio sut y gallai Cristnogion gael eu hannog i fod yn ffyddlon (darllen y Beibl, gweddïo, cymorth gan Gristnogion eraill/sefydliadau Cristnogol).
