Some illnesses, infestations and infections can easily be passed on from one child to another. The child will become unwell as something prevents the body's function from working effectively. It's important to know about different sicknesses, infestations and infections as many of them start with the same signs. Some illnesses are more prevalent and most children have them in childhood. In these cases, only simple treatments are needed such as resting, keeping cool and drinking enough fluids. A quicker response will be necessary if the illness or its effects are more serious. It's important to be aware of the fact that types of sickness and illnesses in children and young people can lead to rapid and severe deterioration in cases such as Sepsis if the signs are not properly identified and addressed.

Immunisation protects children and young people from sickness that could threaten their lives. Infectious diseases can be dangerous and can be prevented by immunisation, enabling the body to be better able to fight the infections. Some diseases such as Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio have almost been eradicated as more and more children are being immunised. Measles and Whooping Cough are now also less common. The diseases can become commonplace once again if children are not immunised. It's not possible to treat all diseases with antibiotics and therefore children must be immunised against these diseases.
As with all medications, children and young people can develop reactions when they are immunised. Common symptoms may appear around the vaccinated area such as swelling, redness and a small, hard lump and the child may develop a fever which feels uncomfortable, leading to a lack of sleep or over-sleeping. These should clear within approximately three days.
MMR: Measles, Mumps and Rubella
DTaP/IPV/Hib/HepB; diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, haemophilus influenzae type b (known as HIB) and hepatitis B.
Pneumococcal (PCV13)
Rotavirus: Vaccine taken by mouth
Meningococcal B (Men B)
Hib/Men C: Hib and Meningitis C
Child flu vaccine: Nasal spray vaccine
4-in-1 (DTaP/IPV): Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough / polio
Men ACWY: protection against meningitis and blood poisoning (septicaemia).
The steps below for reactions are general and depend on what impact the vaccine has on the child.
You will need to call the doctor or 999 immediately if the child's temperature is 39°C or higher or if he/she has a seizure.
If there are any concerns about sickness that cannot be treated at home/on location, it is suggested you call for the doctor or 999 immediately. Sometimes, a child will display symptoms that require urgent action.
Mae imiwneiddio yn amddiffyn plant a phobl ifanc rhag salwch a all beryglu eu bywydau. Gall clefydau heintus fod yn beryglus a gall imiwneiddio eu rhwystro gan alluogi’r corff i fedru ymladd yr heintiau’n well. Mae rhai clefydau megis Difftheria, Tetanws a Pholio bron wedi’u dileu a hyn oherwydd bod mwy a mwy o blant yn cael eu himiwneiddio. Mae’r Frech Goch a’r Pas erbyn hyn hefyd yn llai cyffredin. Gall y clefydau ddod yn gyffredin unwaith eto os na fydd plant yn cael eu himiwneiddio. Nid yw’n bosib trin pob afiechyd gydag antibiotig ac felly mae’n rhaid i blant gael eu himiwneiddio yn erbyn y clefydau yma.
Fel gyda phob meddyginiaeth, gall blant a phobl ifanc ddatblygu adweithiau pan fyddant yn cael eu himiwneiddio. Gall symptomau cyffredin ymddangos o amgylch man y brechiad fel chwydd, yn goch a thalp bach caled a gall y plentyn ddatblygu twymyn gan deimlo ychydig yn anghysurus gan fethu cysgu neu gysgu llawer. Dylai’r rhain glirio o fewn rhyw dri diwrnod.

Men ACWY: amddiffyniad rhag llid yr ymennydd a gwenwyniad gwaed (septicaemia).
Mae’r camau isod ar gyfer adweithiau yn gyffredinol ac yn dibynnu pa effaith mae’r brechlyn yn ei gael ar y plentyn.
Bydd rhaid galw am y meddyg neu ffonio 999 ar unwaith os yw gwres y plentyn yn 39°C neu’n uwch neu os fydd yn cael ffit.

Working in an early years and childcare setting requires practitioners who are aware of common sicknesses and infestations/infections as a child matures from being an infant to a teenager, identifying their signs and symptoms. Although the signs of some sicknesses, such as the illnesses against which children are immunised, are common, some signs, such as a rash, that appear on the body may vary. Practitioners need to be able to differentiate between these by identifying that a meningitis rash doesn't disappear if a glass is pressed over it. By identifying the range of symptoms, the best care and support can be offered to children and their parents/carers. Children will develop colds consistently and when identifying common symptoms, the practitioner can make the process easier for the child to deal with the condition and can encourage the child to drink fluids regularly. It's also important that the location staff know when children receive vaccinations. It's possible for children to have a reaction to vaccinations and although the majority will disappear in about three days, being aware of them will enable practitioners to offer the right care that they need.
It's important that practitioners know how to respond to signs of sickness by developing the ability to do this routinely. If a child suffers from a high temperature, vigilant response will be necessary as temperatures of 39°C or above can be dangerous if not appropriately identified and treated. It is required that all staff at the location have the information that will allow them to respond appropriately to signs of potential sickness and infestations/infections, in accordance with workplace policies and procedures. It's important to be vigilant while working with babies as they're unable to report feeling unwell. Symptoms such as the following will need to be kept in mind:
By getting familiar with working with babies and children and developing an understanding of signs of sickness, the practitioner will confidently develop to identify and respond effectively in the child's interests. Notice there are policies and procedures in place within the location that provide clear guidance on what needs to be done in different situations. As part of their role, a practitioner needs to get familiar with the policies and procedures. Notice there is an appropriate policy on medication. This sets out a guidance on what the location is required to adopt if a child needs medication whilst at the location.
The practitioner will need to get familiar with the process of adapting daily routines as some sicknesses suffered by children are long term and he/she will need to ensure that children receive their medication on a regular basis. Asthma, diabetes and epilepsy are examples of these sorts of conditions. With some types of common sicknesses, such as a cold, the practitioner will need to ensure that there is enough air in the room without being too cold. The child can be offered quiet periods where they can read stories or make a jigsaw in a comfortable environment. Sick children get very tired, so they will need resting periods. If the infection is a fungal one, such as ringworm or impetigo, it is essential that the practitioner and all staff members have good hygiene standards in order to prevent the spread of infection. It must be ensured that everyone washes their hands regularly and that the infected child is encouraged not to touch the sore spot. If the baby does touch the sore spot, it will be necessary to explain that the hands must be washed immediately. An understanding of children's temperature and which temperatures can be life threatening must be developed. Although the temperatures of small children rise and fall quickly, the practitioner must be able to recognise the signs so that they know what action to take in order to reduce the temperature to a safe and stable level.
It's important that practitioners record any medication given to a child as well as record any signs of sickness that have spread among children.
Administration of medicine:
The practitioner should take all possible steps to avoid the spread of disease among children by identifying signs and symptoms of infectious diseases.
A list of infectious diseases can be found on the Public Health Wales website.
Wrth weithio mewn lleoliad blynyddoedd cynnar a gofal plant, mae angen i ymarferwyr fod yn ymwybodol o salwch a phlâu/haint sy’n gyffredin wrth i blentyn dyfu o fod yn faban i berson ifanc yn ei arddegau gan adnabod eu harwyddion a’u symptomau. Er bod arwyddion rhai mathau o salwch, megis yr afiechydon y caiff plant eu himiwneiddio yn eu herbyn, yn gyffredin, bydd rhai arwyddion, megis brech, sy’n arddangos ar y corff yn medru amrywio. Mae angen i ymarferwyr fedru gwahaniaethu rhwng y rhain gan adnabod nad yw brech llid yr ymennydd yn diflannu os rhoddir gwydr drosto. Wrth adnabod yr amrywiaeth o symptomau, gellir cynnig y gofal a’r gefnogaeth gorau posib i blant a’u rhieni/gofalwyr. Bydd plant yn datblygu annwyd yn gyson ac wrth adnabod y symptomau cyffredin, gall yr ymarferydd wneud y broses yn haws i’r plentyn i ddelio â’r cyflwr a’i annog i yfed yn rheolaidd. Mae hefyd yn bwysig bod staff y lleoliad yn gwybod pryd mae plant yn derbyn brechiadau. Mae’n bosibl i blant gael adwaith i frechiadau ac er y bydd y mwyafrif yn diflannu ymhen ryw dri diwrnod, bydd gwybod amdanynt yn galluogi ymarferwyr i gynnig y gofal cywir sydd ei angen arnynt.
Mae’n bwysig bod ymarferwyr yn gwybod sut i ymateb i arwyddion o salwch gan ddatblygu’r gallu i wneud hyn yn rheoliadd. Os bydd plentyn yn dioddef o wres uchel, bydd angen ymateb trwy fod yn wyliadwrus gan fod tymheredd o 39°C neu uwch yn medru bod yn beryglus os na chaiff ei adnabod a’i drin yn briodol. Mae angen i holl staff y lleoliad fod â’r wybodaeth a fydd yn eu caniatáu i ymateb yn briodol i arwyddion o salwch a phlâu/haint posibl, yn unol â pholisïau a gweithdrefnau’r gweithle. Bydd angen bod yn wyliadwrus wrth weithio gyda babanod gan nad ydynt yn medru dweud eu bod yn teimlo’n sâl. Bydd angen cadw llygaid ar symptomau fel y rhai canlynol:
Wrth ymgyfarwyddo â gweithio gyda babanod a phlant a datblygu dealltwriaeth o arwyddion o salwch, bydd yr ymarferydd yn datblygu’n hyderus i adnabod ac ymateb yn effeithiol, a hynny er lles y plentyn. Gweler fod polisïau a gweithdrefnau yn eu lle o fewn y lleoliad sy’n rhoi arweiniad clir ar yr hyn sydd angen ei wneud mewn sefyllfaoedd gwahanol. Fel rhan o’u rôl, y mae angen i ymarferwr ymgyfarwyddo â’r polisïau a’r gweithdrefnau yma. Gweler fod yna bolisi priodol ar feddyginiaeth. Mae hwn yn gosod canllawiau ar yr hyn sy’n ofynnol i’r lleoliad ei fabwysiadu os bydd angen rhoi meddyginiaeth i blentyn yn ystod ei amser yn y lleoliad.
Bydd angen i’r ymarferydd ymgyfarwyddo â’r broses o addasu arferion dyddiol gan fod rhai mathau o salwch y mae plant yn ddioddef ohonynt yn hir dymor a bydd angen sicrhau bod y plant yn cael eu meddyginiaethau yn rheolaidd. Mae asthma, diabetes ac epilepsi a rhai alergeddau yn enghreifftiau o’r mathau hyn o gyflyrau. Gyda rhai mathau o salwch cyffredin, megis annwyd, bydd angen i’r ymarferydd sicrhau bod digon o aer yn yr ystafell heb iddi fod yn rhy oer. Gellir cynnig cyfnodau tawel i’r plentyn lle all ddarllen storïau neu wneud jig-so mewn amgylchfyd gysurus. Mae plant sâl yn blino llawer, felly, bydd angen iddyn nhw gael cyfnodau i orffwys. Os yw’r haint yn un ffwngaidd, megis y darwden neu impetigo, mae’n hanfodol bod yr ymarferydd a holl aelodau staff â safonau hylendid da er mwyn atal yr haint rhag lledaenu. Rhaid sicrhau bod pawb yn golchi eu dwylo’n rheolaidd ac annog y plentyn heintus i geisio peidio â chyffwrdd â’r man dolurus. Os bydd yn gwneud hynny, bydd angen esbonio bod rhaid golchi’r dwylo yn syth. Rhaid datblygu dealltwriaeth o wres plant a pha dymheredd a all fod yn beryg bywyd. Er bod gwres plant bach yn codi a disgyn yn gyflym, mae’n rhaid i’r ymarferydd fedru adnabod yr arwyddion fel eu bod yn gwybod pa gamau i’w cymryd er mwyn lleihau’r gwres i lefel diogel a sefydlog.
Mae’n bwysig bod ymarferwyr yn cofnodi unrhyw feddyginiaeth a roddir i blentyn yn ogystal â chofnodi unrhyw arwydd o salwch a wnaeth ledu ymysg plant.
Rhoi meddyginiaeth:
Dylai’r ymarferydd gymryd pob cam posib i osgoi clefydau rhag lledaenu ymysg plant drwy adnabod arwyddion a symptomau o glefydau heintus.
Gellir dod o hyd i restr clefydau heintus ar wefan Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru.
