Child-centred practice and behaviour expectations

Children learning

As the practitioner develops a positive relationship with the children in their care, they will place the child at the centre of any decisions made. A good relationship between positive and proactive approaches and child-centred practice will ensure that behaviour is managed effectively and that the child knows what is expected of them. If the child is at the centre of creating a plan to manage their behaviour, they will feel part of the process and they will be able to ensure that the expectations placed on them are not too ambitious. It will be helpful to set realistic boundaries and develop an understanding of the consequences their behaviour will have on their life.

The meaning of positive approaches is to be operating in a way that considers the child-centred approach by:

  • concentrating on the child as an individual
  • listening
  • looking at holistic development
  • encouraging the child to make decisions and solve problems
  • respecting and valuing
  • considering the child's likes and dislikes
  • recognising communication ability and skills
  • understanding the effect of the environment on the child.

By practising the steps above, you will consider each child as an individual and thus minimise the likelihood that the child will display negative behaviour.

It is important that the practitioner discusses behaviour with the children so that they understand what the expectations are. This will develop the children's confidence to discuss any behaviours which challenge and help them understand why they are behaving as they are. A frustrated child could throw "Lego" blocks across the room because the task is challenging. Encouraging the child to choose a less challenging task can prevent this from happening. In a situation like this, the child will need to be supported to understand what causes such behaviour and how it can be managed in order to achieve positive outcomes. In some situations, there is no point in trying to reason with a child as their behaviour stems from past events which they do not want to discuss.

In agreeing achievable goals and setting boundaries, it is important that everyone in contact with the child or young person is involved in the planning. This will help develop positive behaviour.

Realistic targets need to be set to match the age and stage of development of the child with the intention that the child succeeds. Not doing this could cause the child to behave negatively. If the targets are too ambitious, the child may give up, lose interest and behave in a challenging way because they do not understand the requirements of the task or activity. On the other hand, if the targets are too easy and do not challenge the child, it can create a situation where the child starts behaving mischievously because of a lack of interest in the work which has been set. In allowing the children to be involved in the planning, they will feel included in the decisions made about them that will lead to positive behavioural outcomes.

When setting boundaries, it is important that children understand the purpose of the boundaries and what is expected of them. There is no point in telling a child not to climb the wall unless you explain why. The dangers and likely consequences of breaking rules need to be explained to children and they need to know and understand the consequences of crossing these boundaries. As children grow older, and understand more, they can see the purpose of the boundaries, and they can also contribute better to setting them.

Rules can be set that will promote understanding and expectations about behaviour. The rules can be:

  • Expressed orally by explaining the situation to the children to ensure that they know what is expected of them. This could be done during circle time, or at specific times of the day.
  • Expressed in writing by making a list of classroom or home rules and displaying them where everyone can see them.
  • Expressed by reminding children, because they become engrossed in their play and therefore need to be reminded regularly of the importance of following the rules.

Collaboration will also promote an understanding of expectations about behaviour and encourage positive behaviour.

Working together to encourage positive behaviour

  • If rules are available within childcare settings, parents and carers need to know about these to ensure consistency and avoid conflict. This will make the process of following rules easier for the child.
  • If the child is aware that rules differ in different settings, in different classes or at home, the child can challenge them. To avoid this, consistent practice must be demonstrated where the rules are not frequently changed.
  • Children enjoy having rules that are easy to understand and it is seen that a lack of good rules leads to behavioural problems among children and young people.
  • All childcare settings have a behaviour policy and this policy should be shared with staff, children and parents/carers.
  • Home-school contact books can be an effective means of ensuring that staff and parents/carers communicate with each other. Staff will be able to write about the child's behaviour and achievements. Parents/carers can also complete the book in the same way to monitor incidents that may affect the child's behaviour. Working in this way can help the child to change if they exhibit unacceptable behaviour.

Both the setting and the home need to work in partnership to promote positive behaviour, taking steps to prevent negative behaviour, to reinforce the setting's rules and to support the school when a child or young person has to be punished. Due to this, children will receive consistent messages about how to behave positively in the setting and at home.

Children will develop to realise the benefits of positive behaviour for themselves and others. They will come to understand that positive behaviour enables them to participate positively in activities and interact with their friends without any conflict. They will gain the respect of the practitioner, other staff within the setting and the children because their positive behaviour is one that encourages good relationships. The practitioner needs to work in a way that gives praise and constructive feedback to the child if they are achieving behavioural goals and meeting agreed boundaries.

Children express their feelings through their behaviour and exhibit behaviours which challenge if their needs are not met. By developing good relationships with children and offering consistent praise for their achievements, they will start feeling good about themselves. This will encourage them to act positively on a regular basis. If the child regularly receives praise and constructive feedback from the practitioner, they will enjoy being in the setting and they will manage their behaviour better.

Wrth i’r ymarferwr ddatblygu perthynas bositif gyda’r plant yn eu gofal bydd yn sicrhau bod y plentyn yn ganolog i unrhyw benderfyniadau a wneir. Bydd perthynas dda rhwng dulliau cadarnhaol a rhagweithiol ac ymarfer plentyn canolog yn sicrhau bod ymddygiad yn cael ei reoli yn effeithiol a bod y plentyn yn gwybod yr hyn a ddisgwylir ohono. Os yw’r plentyn yn ganolog wrth greu cynllun i reoli ei ymddygiad bydd yn teimlo’n rhan o’r broses ac yn gallu sicrhau nad yw’r disgwyliadau ohono yn rhy uchelgeisiol. Bydd yn gymorth i osod ffiniau realistig a dod i ddeall y canlyniadau y caiff ei ymddygiad ar ei fywyd.

Er mwyn gweithredu mewn ffordd sydd yn ystyried y dull plentyn-ganolog dylid:

  • canolbwyntio ar y plentyn fel unigolyn
  • gwrando
  • ystyried datblygiad cyfannol
  • annog y plentyn i wneud penderfyniadau a datrys problemau
  • parchu a gwerthfawrogi
  • ystyried hoff bethau a chas bethau’r plentyn
  • adnabod sgiliau a’r gallu’r plentyn i gyfathrebu
  • deall effaith yr amgylchedd ar y plentyn.

Trwy weithredu fel hyn bydd modd ystyried y plant fel unigolion gan leihau’r tebygrwydd eu bod yn arddangos ymddygiad negyddol.

Mae’n bwysig bod yr ymarferwr yn trafod ymddygiad gyda’r plant er mwyn iddynt ddeall beth yw’r disgwyliadau. Bydd hyn yn datblygu hyder y plant i drafod unrhyw ymddygiad heriol ac yn eu cynorthwyo i ddeall pam eu bod yn ymddwyn fel ag y maent. Gallai blentyn rhwystredig daflu blociau ‘Lego’ ar draws yr ystafell am fod y dasg yn un heriol. Bydd annog y plentyn i ddewis tasg lai heriol yn gallu atal hyn rhag digwydd. Gyda sefyllfa fel hyn bydd angen cefnogi’r plentyn i ddeall beth sy’n achosi ymddygiad o’r fath a sut y gellir ei reoli er mwyn derbyn canlyniadau positif. Mewn rhai sefyllfaoedd nid oes pwrpas ceisio rhesymu gyda phlentyn gan fod ei ymddygiad yn deillio o ddigwyddiadau o’r gorffennol nad yw am drafod.

Wrth gytuno ar nodau y gellir eu cyflawni a gosod ffiniau mae’n bwysig fod pawb sydd mewn cysylltiad â’r plentyn neu’r person ifanc yn rhan o’r cynllunio. Bydd hyn yn gymorth wrth ddatblygu ymddygiad cadarnhaol.

Mae angen gosod targedau realistig i gyd fynd ag oed a cham datblygiad y plentyn gyda’r bwriad fod y plentyn yn llwyddo. Gallai peidio gwneud hyn achosi i’r plentyn ymddwyn yn negyddol. Os yw’r targedau yn rhy uchelgeisiol efallai bydd y plentyn yn rhoi'r gorau iddi, yn colli diddordeb ac yn ymddwyn yn heriol gan nad yw’n deall gofynion y dasg neu’r gweithgaredd. Ar y llaw arall os yw’r targedau yn rhy hawdd a heb fod yn herio’r plentyn, gall greu sefyllfa lle bydd y plentyn yn troi at ddrygioni oherwydd diffyg diddordeb yn y gwaith a osodwyd. Wrth ganiatáu i’r plant fod yn rhan o’r cynllunio byddant yn teimlo eu bod yn cael eu cynnwys yn y penderfyniadau a wneir amdanynt a fydd yn arwain at ganlyniadau positif o ran ymddygiad.

Wrth osod ffiniau mae’n bwysig fod y plant yn deall pwrpas y ffiniau a beth a ddisgwylir ohonynt. Nid oes pwrpas dweud wrth blentyn am beidio dringo’r wal os nad ydych yn esbonio pam. Mae angen esbonio’r peryglon a’r canlyniadau tebygol wrth dorri rheolau i’r plant ac mae angen iddynt wybod a deall canlyniadau croesi'r terfynau hyn. Wrth i blant fynd yn hŷn, a deall mwy, gallent weld pwrpas y terfynau, a gallent hefyd gyfrannu’n well at eu gosod.

Gellir gosod rheolau a fydd yn hybu dealltwriaeth a disgwyliadau ynglŷn ag ymddygiad. Gall y rheolau fod:

  • Ar lafar trwy esbonio’r sefyllfa i’r plant er mwyn sicrhau eu bod yn gwybod beth a ddisgwylir ohonynt. Gellid gwneud hyn yn ystod amser cylch, neu ar adegau penodol yn ystod y dydd.
  • Yn ysgrifenedig trwy wneud rhestr o reolau’r dosbarth neu’r cartref a’u gosod mewn man ble gall pawb eu gweld.
  • Wrth atgoffa plant gan eu bod yn ymgolli yn eu chwarae ac felly angen eu hatgoffa yn rheolaidd am bwysigrwydd dilyn y rheolau.

Bydd cydweithio hefyd yn hybu dealltwriaeth o ddisgwyliadau ynglŷn ag ymddygiad gan annog ymddygiad cadarnhaol.

Cydweithio i annog ymddygiad cadarnhaol

  • Os oes rheolau ar gael o fewn lleoliadau gofal plant mae angen sicrhau fod rhieni a gofalwyr yn gwybod am y rhain er mwyn sicrhau cysondeb ac osgoi gwrthdaro. Bydd hyn yn gwneud y broses o ddilyn rheolau yn haws i’r plentyn.
  • Os yw’r plentyn yn ymwybodol fod y rheolau yn gwahaniaethu mewn lleoliadau gwahanol, mewn dosbarthiadau gwahanol neu yn y cartref gall y plentyn eu herio. Er mwyn osgoi hyn mae’n rhaid arddangos arfer cyson ble na fydd y rheolau yn cael ei newid yn aml.
  • Mae plant yn mwynhau cael rheolau sydd yn hawdd i’w deall a gwelir mai diffyg rheolau da sydd yn arwain at broblemau ymddygiadol ymysg plant a phobl ifanc.
  • Mae gan bob lleoliad gofal plant bolisi ar ymddygiad a dylai’r polisi hwn gael ei rannu ymysg staff, plant a rhieni/gofalwyr.
  • Gall llyfrau cyswllt rhwng yr ysgol a’r cartref fod yn ddull effeithiol i sicrhau bod staff a rhieni/gofalwyr yn cyfathrebu â’i gilydd. Bydd staff yn medru ysgrifennu am ymddygiad a chyflawniadau’r plentyn. Hefyd gall rieni/gofalwyr lenwi’r llyfr yn yr un modd er mwyn monitro digwyddiadau a allai effeithio ar ymddygiad y plentyn. Mae gweithio yn y modd hwn yn gallu cynorthwyo’r plentyn i newid os yw ei ymddygiad yn annerbyniol.

Mae angen i’r lleoliad a’r cartref weithio mewn partneriaeth er mwyn hyrwyddo ymddygiad positif, gan gymryd camau i atal ymddygiad negyddol, i atgyfnerthu rheolau’r lleoliad ac i gefnogi’r ysgol pan fydd angen cosbi plentyn neu berson ifanc. Oherwydd hyn bydd plant yn derbyn negeseuon cyson am sut i ymddwyn yn gadarnhaol yn y lleoliad ac yn y cartref.

Bydd plant yn datblygu i weld manteision ymddygiad cadarnhaol iddynt eu hunain ac i eraill. Byddant yn dod i ddeall bod ymddygiad cadarnhaol yn eu galluogi i gymryd rhan yn bositif mewn gweithgareddau gan ryngweithio gyda’u ffrindiau heb unrhyw wrthdaro. Byddant yn ennill parch yr ymarferwr, staff eraill o fewn y lleoliad a’r plant gan fod eu hymddygiad cadarnhaol yn un sy’n annog perthynas dda. Mae angen i’r ymarferwr weithio mewn ffordd sy’n rhoi canmoliaeth ac adborth adeiladol i’r plentyn os yw’n cyflawni nodau ymddygiad a bodloni ffiniau y cytunwyd arnynt.

Mae plant yn dangos eu teimladau trwy eu hymddygiad ac fe fyddant yn dangos ymddygiad heriol os na fydd eu hanghenion yn cael eu cwrdd. Wrth ddatblygu perthynas dda gyda’r plant gan gynnig canmoliaeth gyson am eu cyflawniadau byddant yn dod i deimlo’n dda am eu hunain. Bydd hyn yn eu sbarduno i ymddwyn yn gadarnhaol yn rheolaidd. Os yw’r plentyn yn derbyn canmoliaeth ac adborth adeiladol yn gyson gan yr ymarferwr yna bydd yn mwynhau bod yn y lleoliad ac yn rheoli ei ymddygiad yn well.

How practitioners' actions influence childrens behaviour including positive behaviour

Sut mae gweithredoedd ymarferwyr yn dylanwadu ar ymddygiad plant gan gynnwys ymddygiad cadarnhaol

Happy Child

Behaviour is learned by children and it's essential that practitioners know this so they can use suitable methods to manage their behaviour. To support positive behaviour, consistent approaches and responses are vital as the child is going through the process of learning and starting to come to understand themselves and the world around them. A child's self-concept and self-image must be considered, along with the fact that consistency in behaviour management can impact these elements. If policies are in place in childcare settings, the approaches will be obvious, and all staff members need to familiarise themselves with them to maintain consistency within the workplace. This can be ensured by discussing the policy regularly so that the guidelines are understood by all, for the benefit of the child.

These approaches should be considered:

  • Developing positive relationships with the children and being a positive role model so the practitioner gains the children's respect.
  • Children will respond well to adults who spend time with them, listen to them, play with them and show appreciation of them.
  • Creating an environment where everyone can participate and be treated fairly will give the children a sense of belonging and being part of the setting.
  • When children are considered when planning and allowed to be part of the planning they will respond better as they are part of the process of setting rules and boundaries.
  • By understanding what needs to be planned and put into place you will support the child to manage distressed and angry feelings in a way that reduces the need for behaviour which challenges any restrictions.
  • By considering children's interests, their likes and dislikes, the practitioner can plan positively for them. Children will respect your interest in them.
  • Making sure that your expectations of the child are realistic. When realistic targets are set, children will display positive behaviour.
  • Discussing class rules will make expectations clear to every child.
  • Celebrating children's achievements, however small, gives them a sense of self-worth.
  • Constant praise, individually or in a group, will make children feel good about themselves.
  • Rewarding good behaviour will make children more likely to repeat this behaviour.
  • Punishing bad behaviour will make children less likely to repeat this behaviour.
  • The rewards and punishments must be consistent so that children understand the consequences of their behaviour.
  • If a group of children or a class is effectively managed they will be better prepared to learn as they are aware of the expectations.
  • Keeping to a routine and maintaining the same practices within the setting will allow children to familiarise with them. Children like having a daily routine. It must be ensured that the routine is appropriate for the child's age and development stage.
  • By changing according to need and intervening early, difficult situations can be prevented in the first place.
  • Listening to children shows them that what they have to say is important. They will feel their voice is heard. They will also develop communication and intellectual skills as well as the ability to control their feelings.

Children's behaviour can be emotionally challenging and severely stressful for adults. Sometimes this will affect the adult's self-esteem and they will blame themselves for failing to control the child's behaviour. The adult may feel angry towards the child because of the stress caused and the trust between the child and the adult will be lost.

Following this, the adult may show a lack of motivation and lose interest in the job while considering another job. Colleagues may lose confidence in them and turn to other staff for help with managing children's behaviour.

It is important that practitioners recognize children's behavioural triggers. There are many factors that can influence children's behaviour and the developmental milestones need to be known and understood so that behaviours that fall outside the developmental norms can be identified.

It is necessary to be able to respond to children's needs or they will be more likely to behave negatively. Children need to be supported to develop so that they can behave positively in society.

Stages of development

Children's development is linked to the areas of learning. Very young children don't understand the meaning of rules, they don't understand the need to share toys or take their turn. Upon reaching the age of 4, this can change. Care must be taken not to set expectations of children too high for them to achieve. This will make them feel worthless which will in turn impact their behaviour. Overly low expectations can also impact the child leading to boredom with the situation.

Environment

The environment can direct children's behaviour. A noisy environment can impair the child's ability to listen and concentrate. If the room is too hot or cold, the children's mood will change and they won't achieve their best. It's necessary to keep to consistent times when organising a daily programme within childcare settings. By organising consistent mealtimes, playtimes and nap times every day, children will develop and get used to the routine and understand its importance. There is also a need for an environment that offers suitable stimulation for the child's age and development stage. When children are kept happy they are more likely to display positive behaviour.

Family and friends

Expectations of behaviour vary within families and can change over time. For example, for some families it's acceptable to eat with a fork only while others require their children to learn to use a knife and fork. If expectations at home aren't the same as expectations at the setting, this can cause unnecessary conflict. Peers can also influence behaviour by persuading children to be part of a group that doesn't always display positive behaviour.

Changes in the child's life

The way children and young people respond to changes can vary, depending on their age and understanding of the situation. A child may show jealous behaviour if a new baby comes to the family or misbehave if a new member joins the family after a divorce. A change of class at school can cause a child to become withdrawn and appear quiet. Whatever the change in the child's life, appropriate support must be offered.

Inconsistency in rules and boundaries of behaviour

If children receive a set of rules to follow, they will understand what's expected of them. If the rules and boundaries change, it will be difficult to manage behaviour. The boundaries need to be clear so that children understand what they can and can't do. Including children and young people in the discussion of setting rules and boundaries will mean they're more likely to be obeyed as the children understand their purpose.

Specific needs

Children may have specific needs that will make it difficult for them to cope with behaviour rules. They may throw toys or strike other children out of frustration. They will also fail to develop sufficient intellectual and language skills to cope with challenging situations.

Norms of children's behavioural development:

15 months old: The child will throw toys or have a tantrum if angry. Doesn't like to share. An adult can draw their attention away from unacceptable behaviour.

18 months old: The child may be determined and frustrated and display angry behaviour if uncomfortable in a situation. An adult can draw the child's attention away from unacceptable behaviour.

2 years old: By now, the child starts to respond with anger if told off by an adult. The child will also get angry with peers and may bite, strike and push them.

3 years old: Understanding of rules starts to develop and the child knows that there is a need to apologise if they've done something wrong.

4 years old: By now the child understands basic rules and is starting to make sense of what's 'right' and 'wrong'. However, if the child hears swearing they will then use these words when speaking. Adults can't distract the child as easily, but reasoning may be possible.

5 years old: If the child displays unacceptable behaviour, they will feel guilty and ashamed. Sometimes the child will show off in front of friends, and adults will need to intervene if there is quarrelling. The child knows the methods of behaviour management such as being prevented from going out to play.

6 to 7 years old: The child's personality is developing and there will be periods of sulking or silly behaviour. By now, arguments between friends can be solved independently. They don't like to tidy up after activities and will often argue to avoid doing this. They understand the concept of 'right' and 'wrong'. They understand that rules are needed when playing a game.

The practitioner will need to consider how their behaviour and responses support the children's positive behaviour. By taking time to reflect on this, the practitioner's practice will improve as the skills and strengths that have been adopted to promote and encourage positive behaviour will have to be identified. It is therefore necessary to reflect on current performance and working practices to see if the support given to children is effective and efficient.

The support given to a child should be based on:

Rephrasing: Looking at the situation from the perspective of others e.g. the child may not be selected by their peers to be in the football team as their ball skills are not very good. The practitioner can explain to the child that they can use this time to practice their ball skills.

Calming: Reassuring the child and offering a calm atmosphere so that they can relax. This will enable them to move away from the situation which has aggravated them.

Redirecting: Changing the direction of the activity if it results in undesirable behaviour. This will prevent the child from being in a situation that they will not be able to cope with.

Distracting: Drawing the child's attention away from the activity which is causing the behavioural problem.

Nipping it in the bud: Saying something that will change the situation or removing a child from the situation before something happens.

Ignoring: Ignoring behaviour which challenges will ensure that the child does not receive too much attention. This will prevent them from repeating the undesirable behaviour.

Mae ymddygiad yn rhywbeth mae plant yn ei ddysgu ac mae’n hanfodol bod ymarferwyr yn gwybod ac yn deall hyn er mwyn medru defnyddio dulliau addas o reoli eu hymddygiad. Er mwyn cefnogi ymddygiad cadarnhaol mae dulliau gweithredu ac ymatebion cyson yn hanfodol gan fod y plentyn yn mynd drwy’r broses o ddysgu a dechrau dod i ddeall ei hunain a’r byd o’i hamgylch. Bydd rhaid ystyried hunan gysyniad a hunanddelwedd plentyn a bod cysondeb o ran rheoli ymddygiad yn medru cael effaith ar yr elfennau hyn. Os fydd polisïau yn eu lle o fewn lleoliadau gofal plant bydd y dulliau gweithredu yn amlwg a bydd yn angenrheidiol bod pob aelod o staff yn cyfarwyddo â hwy er mwyn cynnal cysondeb o fewn y gweithle. Gellir sicrhau hyn trwy drafod y polisi yn rheolaidd fel bod y canllawiau yn cael eu deall gan bawb, a hynny er lles y plentyn.

Dylid ystyried y dulliau gweithredu hyn:

  • Datblygu perthnasau positif gyda’r plant a bod yn fodel rôl gadarnhaol fel bod yr ymarferwr yn ennyn parch y plant.
  • Bydd plant yn ymateb yn dda i oedolion sy'n treulio amser gyda nhw, yn gwrando arnyn nhw, yn chwarae gyda nhw ac yn dangos iddyn nhw eu bod yn eu gwerthfawrogi.
  • Wrth greu amgylchedd ble mae pawb yn medru cymryd rhan a chael eu trin yn deg bydd y plant yn cael teimlad o berthyn a bod yn rhan o’r lleoliad.
  • Wrth ystyried y plant wrth gynllunio a gadael iddynt fod yn rhan o’r cynllunio byddant yn ymateb yn well gan eu bod yn rhan o’r broses o osod rheolau a ffiniau.
  • Wrth ddeall beth sydd angen ei gynllunio a’i gyflwyno byddwch yn cynorthwyo’r plentyn i reoli gofid a dicter mewn ffordd sy’n lleihau’r angen i ymddwyn mewn ffordd sy’n herio unrhyw gyfyngiadau.
  • Trwy gymryd i ystyriaeth ddiddordebau’r plant, eu hoff bethau a chas bethau, gall yr ymarferwr gynllunio’n gadarnhaol ar eu cyfer. Bydd plant yn parchu bod gennych ddiddordeb ynddynt.
  • Gwneud yn siŵr fod yr hyn yr ydych yn ei ddisgwyl gan y plentyn yn realistig. Wrth osod targedau realistig bydd plant yn arddangos ymddygiad positif.
  • Wrth drafod rheolau’r dosbarth bydd y disgwyliadau’n glir i bob plentyn.
  • Wrth ddathlu cyflawniadau plant, pa bynnag mor fach ydynt, rhoddir teimlad o hunanwerth iddynt.
  • Trwy roi canmoliaeth gyson, yn unigol neu mewn grŵp bydd plant yn teimlo’n dda am eu hunain.
  • Wrth wobrwyo ymddygiad da bydd plant yn fwy tebygol o ailadrodd yr ymddygiad yma.
  • Wrth gosbi ymddygiad annymunol bydd plentyn yn llai tebygol o ail adrodd yr ymddygiad yma.
  • Mae’n rhaid bod cysondeb o ran y gwobrwyon a chosbau fel bod plant yn deall canlyniadau eu hymddygiad.
  • Os bydd grŵp o blant neu ddosbarth yn cael eu rheoli’n effeithiol yna byddant yn fwy parod i ddysgu gan eu bod yn ymwybodol o’r disgwyliadau.
  • Wrth gadw at drefn a chynnal yr un arferion o fewn y lleoliad bydd plant yn cyfarwyddo â hwy. Mae plant yn hoffi cael trefn ar eu diwrnod. Mae angen gwneud yn siŵr fod y drefn yn briodol ar gyfer oed a chyfnod datblygu'r plentyn.
  • Wrth newid yn ôl yr angen ac ymyrryd yn gynnar gellir atal sefyllfaoedd anodd yn y lle cyntaf.
  • Mae gwrando ar blant yn dangos bod yr hyn sydd ganddynt i’w ddweud yn bwysig. Byddant yn teimlo bod eu llais yn cael ei glywed. Byddant hefyd yn datblygu sgiliau cyfathrebu a deallusol a hefyd y gallu i reoli eu teimladau.

Gall ymddygiad plant herio oedolion yn emosiynol gan roi straen difrifol arnynt. Weithiau bydd hyn yn effeithio ar hunan barch yr oedolyn a fydd yn beio ei hun am fethu rheoli ymddygiad y plentyn. Mae’n bosib y bydd yr oedolyn yn teimlo’n ddig tuag at y plentyn oherwydd y straen a achoswyd a bydd yr ymddiriedaeth rhwng y plentyn a’r oedolyn yn cael ei golli.

Yn dilyn hyn gall yr oedolyn arddangos diffyg cymhelliant a cholli diddordeb yn y swydd gan ystyried swydd arall. Efallai bydd cydweithwyr yn colli ffydd ynddynt ac yn troi at aelodau eraill o’r staff am gymorth ynglŷn â rheoli ymddygiad plant.

Mae’n bwysig bod ymarferwyr yn adnabod sbardunau ymddygiadol plant. Gall sawl ffactor ddylanwadu ar ymddygiad plant ac mae rhaid gwybod a deall y cerrig milltir datblygiad fel y gellir adnabod ymddygiad sydd heb fod o fewn y normau datblygiad.

Rhaid gallu ymateb i anghenion plant neu byddant yn fwy tebygol o ymddwyn yn negyddol. Mae angen cefnogi plant i ddatblygu fel eu bod yn medru ymddwyn yn gadarnhaol o fewn cymdeithas.

Camau datblygiad

Cysylltir datblygiad plant gyda’r meysydd dysgu. Nid yw plant ifanc iawn yn deall ystyr rheolau ac nid ydynt yn deall bod angen rhannu teganau neu gymryd eu tro. Fodd bynnag unwaith y byddant yn cyrraedd tua 4 oed mae hyn yn newid. Ni ddylid gosod disgwyliadau rhy uchel ar blant yn y cyfnod yma rhag iddynt fethu cyflawni. Gall hyn arwain at siom a fydd efallai yn amharu ar ymddygiad. Mae gosod disgwyliadau sydd yn rhy isel hefyd yn amharu ar blant gan arwain at ddiflastod.

Yr amgylchedd

Mae’r amgylchedd yn gallu llywio sut mae plant yn ymddwyn. Gall amgylchedd swnllyd amharu ar allu’r plentyn i wrando a chanolbwyntio. Bydd hwyliau’r plant yn newid os yw’r ystafell yn rhy oer neu’n rhy boeth yna ac ni fyddant yn cyflawni i’r eithaf. Mae angen cadw at amseroedd cyson wrth drefnu rhaglen ddyddiol o fewn lleoliadau gofal plant. Wrth drefnu amseroedd bwyta, chwarae a chysgu cyson bob dydd, bydd plant yn dod i arfer gyda’r drefn gan ddeall ei bwysigrwydd. Mae hefyd angen amgylchedd sydd yn cynnig symbyliad addas ar gyfer oed a cham datblygiad y plentyn. Wrth gadw plant yn hapus maent yn fwy tebygol o arddangos ymddygiad positif.

Teulu a ffrindiau

Mae disgwyliadau o ran ymddygiad yn amrywio rhwng teuluoedd ac yn gallu newid dros amser. Er enghraifft mae rhai teuluoedd yn gweld hi’n dderbyniol i fwyta gyda fforc yn unig tra bod teuluoedd eraill angen i’w plant ddysgu defnyddio cyllell a fforc. Os nad yw disgwyliadau’r cartref yr un peth â disgwyliadau’r lleoliadau gall hyn achosi gwrthdaro diangen. Mae cyfoedion hefyd yn medru dylanwadu ar ymddygiad wrth annog plant i fod yn rhan o grŵp sydd heb fod bob amser yn arddangos ymddygiad positif.

Newidiadau ym mywyd y plentyn

Gall y ffordd mae plant a phobl ifanc yn ymateb i newidiadau amrywio, yn ôl eu hoedran a’u dealltwriaeth o’r sefyllfa. Gall blentyn ymddwyn yn genfigennus os daw baban newydd i’r teulu neu gall ymddwyn yn wael os bydd aelod newydd yn ymuno a’r teulu yn dilyn ysgariad. Gall newid dosbarth yn yr ysgol achosi plentyn i fod yn encilgar ac yn dawel. Beth bynnag yw’r newid ym mywyd y plentyn mae’n rhaid cynnig y gefnogaeth briodol.

Anghysondeb o ran rheolau a ffiniau ymddygiad

Os yw plant yn derbyn cyfres o reolau i’w dilyn byddant yn deall beth sydd i’w ddisgwyl ohonynt. Os yw’r rheolau a’r ffiniau yn newid yna bydd yn anodd rheoli ymddygiad. Mae angen i’r ffiniau fod yn glir fel bod plant yn deall beth allant wneud ar hyn na allant wneud. Bydd cynnwys plant a phobl ifanc yn y drafodaeth wrth osod rheolau a ffiniau yn golygu y byddant yn fwy tebygol o gael eu cadw gan fod y plant yn deall eu pwrpas.

Anghenion penodol

Efallai bydd gan blant anghenion penodol fydd yn ei gwneud yn anodd iddynt gadw at reolau ymddygiad. Efallai byddant yn taflu teganau neu daro plant eraill gan eu bod yn rhwystredig. Ni fyddant weithiau yn datblygu sgiliau deallusol ac iaith ddigonol i allu ymdrin â sefyllfaoedd heriol.

Normau datblygiad ymddygiad plant:

15 mis oed: Bydd y plentyn yn taflu teganau neu’n strancio os yn ddig. Heb fod yn hoffi rhannu. Gall oedolyn dynnu eu sylw oddi wrth ymddygiad annerbyniol.

18 mis oed: Gall y plentyn fod yn benderfynol ac yn rhwystredig gan arddangos ymddygiad blin os yn anghysurus mewn sefyllfa. Gall oedolyn dynnu sylw’r plentyn oddi wrth ymddygiad annerbyniol.

2 flwydd oed: Erbyn hyn mae’r plentyn yn dechrau ymateb gyda dicter os bydd oedolyn yn dweud y drefn. Mae hefyd yn mynd yn flin gyda chyfoedion gan efallai eu cnoi, eu taro a’u gwthio.

3 blwydd oed: Mae dealltwriaeth o reolau yn dechrau datblygu ac mae’r plentyn yn gwybod bod angen ymddiheuro os bydd wedi gneud rhywbeth o’i le.

4 mlwydd oed: Erbyn hyn mae gan y plentyn ddealltwriaeth o reolau sylfaenol gan ddechrau gwneud synnwyr o beth sydd yn ‘gywir’ ac ‘anghywir’. Fodd bynnag, os bydd y plentyn yn clywed rhegi yna bydd yn defnyddio geiriau o’r fath wrth siarad. Nid yw oedolion yn medru tynnu sylw’r plentyn gystal ond weithiau mae’n bosib rhesymu.

5 mlwydd oed: Os yw’r plentyn yn dangos ymddygiad annerbyniol yna bydd yn teimlo’n euog gyda chywilydd o’i hun. Weithiau bydd yn dangos ei hun o flaen ffrindiau a bydd angen i oedolion ymyrryd os bydd cweryla. Mae’r plentyn yn adnabod y dulliau o reoli ymddygiad megis cael ei atal rhag mynd allan i chwarae.

6 i 7 mlwydd oed: Mae personoliaeth y plentyn yn datblygu gan ddangos cyfnodau ble mae’n pwdu neu’n ymddwyn yn wirion. Erbyn hyn mae’n gallu datrys dadleuon rhwng ffrindiau’n annibynnol. Nid yw’n hoffi tacluso ar ôl gweithgareddau ac fe fydd yn aml yn dadlau er mwyn osgoi gwneud hyn. Mae’n deall y cysyniad ‘cywir’ ac ‘anghywir’. Mae’n deall bod angen rheolau wrth chwarae gêm.

Bydd angen i’r ymarferwr ystyried y ffordd mae ei ymddygiad a’i ymatebion yn cefnogi ymddygiad cadarnhaol y plant. Wrth gymryd amser i fyfyrio ynglŷn â hyn bydd arfer yr ymarferwr yn gwella gan y bydd rhaid nodi’r sgiliau a'r cryfderau sydd wedi ei mabwysiadu er mwyn hyrwyddo ac annog ymddygiad cadarnhaol. Rhaid felly edrych yn ôl ar berfformiad ac arferion gwaith presennol er mwyn gweld a yw’r gefnogaeth a roddir i blant yn effeithiol ac effeithlon.

Dylai’r gefnogaeth a roddir i blentyn fod ar sail:

Ailfynegi: Edrych ar y sefyllfa o safbwynt eraill e.e. efallai na fydd y plentyn yn cael ei ddewis gan ei gyfoedion i fod yn y tîm pêl droed gan nad yw ei sgiliau pêl yn dda iawn. Gall yr ymarferwr esbonio i’r plentyn y gall ddefnyddio’r amser hwn i ymarfer ei sgiliau pêl.

Tawelu: Cysuro’r plentyn a chynnig awyrgylch dawel fel y gall ymlacio. Bydd hyn yn ei alluogi i symud i ffwrdd o’r sefyllfa sydd wedi ei gythruddo.

Ailgyfeirio: Newid cyfeiriad y gweithgaredd os yw’n arwain at ymddygiad annymunol. Bydd hyn yn atal y plentyn rhag bod mewn sefyllfa na fydd yn medru ymdopi ag ef.

Tynnu sylw: Tynnu sylw'r plentyn oddi wrth y gweithgaredd sy’n achosi’r problem ymddygiad.

Achub y blaen: Dweud rhywbeth a fydd yn newid y sefyllfa neu dynnu plentyn o’r sefyllfa cyn i rywbeth ddigwydd.

Anwybyddu: Bydd anwybyddu ymddygiad heriol yn sicrhau nad yw’r plentyn yn derbyn gormod o sylw. Bydd hyn yn ei atal rhag ail wneud yr ymddygiad annymunol.
