Seeking support

Childcare workers are expected to update their practice through training and study in order to improve their performance. In order to improve, childcare workers must identify their existing skills and strengths as well as areas for development. To do this, they must look back at their performance and reflect on their practice. They need to evaluate what they do - what they do well, why and how they do this well, what they do not do as well and how to improve.

Continuing professional development (CPD) is a means of planning in order to improve knowledge and skills throughout your career to motivate and develop good practice and deliver good quality services. CPD enables childcare workers to take action in order to develop the knowledge, skills and personal characteristics required to fulfil their professional duties and responsibilities.

The CPD process helps childcare workers to manage their own development continuously. It helps them to record, review and reflect on their learning. CPD is not a box-ticking document to record training that has been completed but a range of different types of learning experiences. Examples include on-the-job development, training and formal qualifications, as well as informal learning and experiential learning. CPD can also involve shadowing others at work, reading information in books or on websites, or talking with colleagues about how they dealt with a difficult situation. The crucial thing is to reflect on learning and think about how it will affect a post or role in the future.

Continuing professional development (CPD) is important because it helps childcare workers to:

  • develop knowledge and understanding of their work
  • manage their own development continuously
  • record, review and reflect on their learning
  • set developmental aims and objectives
  • identify gaps in skills and abilities
  • improve their skills
  • develop new skills
  • experience new situations
  • prepare for new roles and responsibilities
  • maintain a current overview of their professional development
  • record their achievements and rate of development
  • develop their career.
