Whatever the role of a worker in the early years and childcare sector, it will include working as part of a team. Childcare workers need to be able to work with others as a team member for the setting to operate effectively. Working as a team supports work which requires different types of skills and expertise, e.g. a team of professionals such as a playgroup leader, health visitor, speech and language therapist and childcare workers working together to support a disabled child.
When team members cooperate well, respecting and supporting each other, it helps the team to achieve common goals. Each member is responsible for contributing to the team, but the whole group is responsible for its success. Team work is essential in order to develop positive relationships with families/carers. This leads to a positive environment where children feel safe and happy. Effective team working leads to positive outcomes for children with regard to their development, health and well-being.
There are several different types of teams and they will all work in different ways. A core team includes close colleagues who work together regularly or on a daily basis.
A wider team includes professionals, who may not work together on a daily basis, e.g. health visitors, speech and language therapists or educational psychologists. They will need to work together, when appropriate, to improve the provision or to meet the needs of individual children. Cross-functional work involves a team of individuals with a variety of skills, but who are all working towards common goals. Children's centres are an example of cross-functional work, with early years childcare workers, teachers, health visitors, speech and language therapists working as part of the same team.
The principles of team working
Multi-agency working is important in order to support children and their families/carers. Services and professionals need to consult and work together in order to ensure that services are coordinated well and focus on the needs of the child/young person. Services and professionals need to share information and plan together in order to identify the needs of children and young people and meet those needs.
The following people may be included in multi-agency teams:
