Stress

It appears that 1 out of 6 workers deals with stress for various reasons, and striking the correct work/life balance can be difficult at times. Everyone experiences stress at some point or another, when it feels like everything is too much to cope with. Sometimes, people feel that they cannot cope with life, and this effects them in different ways.

Some of the common signs and indicators of stress are:

  • bad moods
  • quieter than usual
  • lack of motivation, commitment or confidence
  • reacting emotionally, tearfully, sensitively or aggressively to different situations
  • regularly off work
  • arriving late at work
  • reduction in personal performance.

The table below shows some of the indicators and symptoms of stress:

Physical Symptoms Mental Symptoms Emotional Symptoms Change in behaviour
Light-headed Worrying too much Anxious Authoritative
Headache Forgetful Anger Overeating
Tiredness Lack of ability to make decisions Powerless Judgemental of others
Insomnia Lack of concentration Moody Drinking too much alcohol
Sweaty palms Difficulty learning new things Frustrated
Shaky Nervous

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the main six causes of stress are:

  • management
  • support
  • relative/relation
  • role
  • change
  • demand.

Childcare workers may feel:

  • that they cannot cope with work pressures,
  • that they cannot manage the way in which they work,
  • that they do not receive enough information and support,
  • that they have stressful relationships, e.g. bullying, or regular disagreements
  • that they do not fully understand their role or responsibilities
  • that they do not engage when changes happen in the workplace.

There are a number of ways to manage stress by making changes to the work setting.

  • provide quite rooms if required, and if there is room.
  • more flexible hours, changing starting and finishing times.
  • changing duties or job description.
  • more assistance and support from managers.

There are a number of ways to reduce stress, including:

  • deep breathing
  • drinking enough liquids
  • sleep
  • smoking cessation
  • relaxing
  • healthy eating
  • exercise
  • not drinking alcohol excessively.

Stress is not a sign of weakness, but rather a natural reaction when spending a lot of time dealing with work pressure. Admitting to feeling stressed or to feelings of depression can be very difficult for some people, but acknowledging stress is very important to the individual, as this is the first step to managing stress. Mae’n debyg bod 1 ym mhob 6 gweithiwr yn delio â straen am sawl rheswm, ac weithiau mae ceisio cael cydbwysedd bywyd a gwaith yn anodd. Mae pawb yn teimlo dan straen o bryd i’w gilydd, pan fydd popeth yn teimlo yn ormod. Weithiau mae pobl yn teimlo nad ydynt yn gallu ymdopi gyda bywyd, ac mae hyn yn effeithio arnynt mewn gwahanol ffyrdd.

Rhai o arwyddion a dangosyddion cyffredin straen yw:

  • hwyliau drwg
  • yn dawelach na’r arfer
  • dim cymhelliant, ymrwymiad na hyder
  • ymateb yn emosiynol, yn ddagreuol, yn sensitif neu yn ymosodol i wahanol sefyllfaoedd
  • amser i ffwrdd o’r gwaith yn gyson
  • cyrraedd y gwaith yn hwyr
  • gostyngiad mewn perfformiad personol.

Mae’r tabl isod yn dangos rhai o arwyddion a symptomau straen:

Symptomau Corfforol Symptomau Meddwl Symptomau Emosiynol Newid mewn ymddygiad
Penysgafn Poeni yn ormodol Gor-bryder Awdurdodol

Yn ôl yr Awdurdod Gweithredol Iechyd a Diogelwch (Health and Safety Executive - HSE), y chwe phrif achos o straen yw:

  • rheoli
  • cefnogaeth
  • perthynas
  • rôl
  • newid
  • galw (demand).

Gall gweithwyr gofal plant deimlo:

  • nad ydynt yn gallu delio â phwysau gwaith
  • nad ydynt yn gallu rheoli’r ffordd y maent yn gweithio
  • nad ydynt yn derbyn digon o wybodaeth a chefnogaeth
  • bod straen mewn perthnasoedd, e.e. bwlio, neu anghytuno cyson
  • nad ydynt yn deall eu rôl a’u cyfrifoldebau’n iawn
  • nad ydynt yn ymgysylltu pan fydd newidiadau yn digwydd yn y gweithle.

Mae sawl ffordd i reoli straen drwy wneud addasiadau i’r lleoliad gwaith:

  • darparu ystafelloedd tawel os oes angen, ac os oes lle
  • oriau gwaith yn fwy hyblyg (flexible), newid yr amser cychwyn a gorffen
  • newid dyletswyddau neu ddisgrifiad swydd
  • mwy o gymorth a chefnogaeth gan reolwyr.

Mae sawl ffordd i leihau straen, sy’n cynnwys:

  • anadlu dwfn
  • yfed digon o hylifau
  • cwsg
  • rhoi’r gorau i ysmygu
  • ymlacio
  • bwyta’n iach
  • ymarfer corff
  • peidio gor-yfed alcohol.

Nid yw straen yn arwydd bod pobl yn wan, ond yn hytrach yn ymateb naturiol pan yn treulio llawer iawn o amser yn delio â phwysau gwaith. Mae cyfaddef i straen neu i deimlad o iselder yn gallu bod yn anodd iawn i rai, ond mae cydnabod straen yn hynod o bwysig i’r unigolyn, oherwydd mai dyma’r cam cyntaf i reoli straen.
