a child in bed with measles

Illness and infection can be transmitted easily from one child to another. A child gets ill when something prevents one of the body's functions from operating effectively. It is important to know about different illnesses and infections as many of them can start with the same symptoms. The initial care required by the child is the same in many cases where simple treatments are needed such as rest, keeping cool, drinking plenty of fluids. A quicker response will be required if the illness or the effects are more serious. The organisms that cause the illness are called pathogens, or germs as they are more commonly referred to. Symptoms of illness and infections in children may include a high temperature, sore throat, headache, rash on the body or diarrhoea. Germs may manifest as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. It is important to know with different types of illnesses and diseases that children can deteriorate quickly, such as sepsis, if the symptoms are not recognised and treated appropriately.

Bacteria

Food poisoning

An illness caused by eating contaminated food. Food is usually contaminated by bacteria such as Salmonella or Escherichia coli (E.coli). Food hygiene must be ensured in order to prevent food poisoning. Bacteria can get into the food without showing any specific signs such as a bad smell or taste. Several different types of bacteria can cause food poisoning and the symptoms associated with each one are all different. Symptoms may include sickness, headache, abdominal pain, breathing difficulties, double vision, blood poisoning and meningitis.

Tuberculosis

An infection that spreads by breathing in droplets when an infected person coughs and sneezes. Symptoms may include coughing, coughing blood, chest pain when coughing, fever, weight loss and damage to the lungs. If it affects the lungs, the bacteria may puncture the lungs. It can affect any part of the body, including the bones, the glands and the nervous system. It is a serious condition but can be cured with the appropriate treatment. The illness will develop quickly once the individual becomes infected but it may not affect the person for years. It will strike when the immune system is weak for any reason. Without treatment, it can be life-threatening.

MRSA (meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)

This infection is harder to treat than any other infection as it is resistant to many types of general antibiotics. Symptoms of this skin infection can manifest as small red lumps. The skin will become swollen, tender or warm to the touch. It is a highly contagious illness and can be spread by touching the infected person or touching contaminated surfaces or objects. Although MRSA is a serious infection, it can be treated effectively with antibiotics.

Dysentery

Inflammation of the bowel that causes mild or significant stomach cramps as well as serious diarrhoea with mucus and blood in the faeces. It may also cause sickness and vomiting. The infection may clear of its own accord within three to seven days but if it continues, will be treated with a course of antibiotics. If the body does not receive fluid quickly or if the condition is left untreated, it can be life-threatening. The infection is transmitted easily and it is therefore important to ensure careful and appropriate hand hygiene.

Bronchitis

An infection and inflammation of the chest which affects the main airways. The child will cough regularly and may produce green or yellow phlegm. They may make a noise when breathing, will feel very ill and will have a high temperature. The bacteria that causes bronchitis may develop into pneumonia. It may also aggravate the symptoms associated with asthma. With the correct treatment, the bronchitis should improve within three to four weeks, but the cough may continue for a longer period.

Ear infections

The child will feel ill and may pull or rub his or her ear. There may be discharge from the ear and the child will have a higher temperature than usual. Sometimes, the ear infection will develop following a cold. The ear may feel full and will occasionally pop, with a buzzing noise in the ear. It is likely to affect the child's hearing and it is important to go to the doctor for treatment in order to prevent any permanent damage to the ear.

Streptococcus

An infection caused by a group of bacteria called streptococcus. The infection will vary from a throat infection to a much more serious infection, such as pneumonia. The symptoms of a throat infection may include a sudden fever, a sore throat and a red throat with white spots, difficulties when swallowing, headache and shivers. It will require treatment with a course of antibiotics.

Tonsillitis

The throat will be sore and the infection will spread to the tonsils causing inflammation. The tissue will swell and become inflamed, causing the child significant pain. Eating will be difficult and as a result, the child will refuse to eat. The child may snore when sleeping as they will be experiencing breathing difficulties. If left untreated, it can lead to an ear infection and affect the sinuses. If a child suffers regularly from tonsillitis, the doctor may suggest an operation to remove the tonsils.

Viruses

Influenza (flu)

A common illness that spreads by coughing and sneezing. It can also be caught by being in close proximity to someone with the illness or by touching contaminated surfaces or objects. It is more common during the winter months but this illness can be caught throughout the year. Symptoms may include a fever, shivers, coughing, sore throat, aching body and bones, fatigue and some children may have sickness and diarrhoea. Although the flu and the common cold share some of the same symptoms, they are completely different; they are caused by a different virus. The condition will last for a week or two but the serious symptoms will disappear within two or three days. The best medication to treat flu is rest and plenty of fluids.

Common cold

Children catch colds on a regular basis as there are many different cold viruses. The nose will run and they may cough and sneeze a lot. As they get older, they will develop an immunity and will catch less colds. Antibiotics will not cure a cold but it is important to ensure that the child drinks enough and is given food that is easy to swallow. The nose should be kept clear in order to be able to breathe easier and menthol rubs can be used at night to facilitate this.

Stomach bugs

Also referred to as gastroenteritis. It spreads by touching contaminated surfaces or objects and by eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water. The child will feel generally unwell; with a cold and a cough. In time, the child will deteriorate and will show symptoms such as vomiting, serious diarrhoea, stomach cramps and fever. This, in its turn, will cause the child to become dehydrated with a dry mouth and skin, and the child will pass less urine. In babies, the front part of the fontanelle will become sunken. The child must be given plenty of water and also rehydration solutions by mouth. Babies may need hospital treatment.

Pneumonia

Also referred to as inflammation of the lung. It is a contagious condition that affects the lungs and can spread from one person to another. It affects the air sacks in the lungs. The air sacks fill with a fluid that affects the individual's ability to breathe. It is a relatively common illness and can cause death in children under five years old, the elderly and the infirm. Pneumonia is more common during the winter as colds and flu that are spread from one person to another are also more common during the winter. Symptoms of the illness may include coughing, possibly including green/yellow mucus, fever, breathlessness, chest pain which gets worse when coughing or breathing deeply, fatigue, lack of energy and loss of appetite. Although a child with viral pneumonia will feel very unwell, they will recover without treatment. Bacterial pneumonia will need to be treated with antibiotics.

Fungi

Athlete's foot

This infection usually starts between the toes. It may occur if the feet have been particularly sweaty or if shoes are too tight. It will appear as a scaly rash which will be itchy and will sting and burn. Occasionally, it will appear as blisters or an ulcer. It can affect one foot or both feet and can spread to the hands, especially if you scratch it regularly or pick at the infected areas of the foot. It can spread through contact with contaminated towels, clothes or flooring. Treatment may include anti-fungal medication that can be bought from a pharmacy. Medication can also be prescribed. Is it is left untreated, it can affect the toenails and also the hands.

Ringworm

It appears on the skin as a scaly raised red ring, with a white centre. Ringworm can be caught from animals. It is very itchy and can be seen on the body and on the skin on the head. Ringworm lives on the cells of the external layer of skin. It spreads through direct contact with an infected person's skin. Medical attention will be required and doctors may prescribe antibiotic cream to cure the ringworm. It should improve quickly following treatment but treatment will need to continue for between two and four weeks in order to ensure that the fungus has completely disappeared.

Yeast infections / Thrush

The infection forms white spots on the tongue, and inside the cheeks and lips. Rubbing the fungus away will leave sore, red marks. It can also affect a baby's bottom as thrush will affect the skin that is in contact with the nappy. In order to clear the infection, medical attention will be required in order to receive anti-fungal treatment. It can be transmitted from one child to another and it is therefore important that feeding equipment is sterilised regularly.

  • yeast infections, such as thrush, can be treated by using a medicated mouthwash or lozenges
  • yeast infections on the skin can be treated by using medication such as cream to be applied to the skin
  • yeast infections in the vagina or the bottom can be treated by using cream or a suppository.

Parasites

Worms

They live in the intestine and appear as small white worms. They can be seen in the faeces. They lay their eggs around the bottom area and causes the child to itch. When itching, the eggs are transmitted to the fingers and under the fingernails. When the child then puts their fingers in their mouth, they will swallow the eggs and the eggs will hatch in the intestine. This process will rotate. When itching and scratching regularly, the bottom will become sore and the child's sleep pattern will be affected. Other symptoms can include loss of appetite, abdominal pain, bloating, sickness, weight loss and stomach pain. Good hygiene will need to be ensured by all household members, including hand washing after being to the toilet, before eating and keeping the fingernails short. Clothes, night clothes and bed clothes will also need to be changed regularly.

Malaria

Malaria is found in a number of countries but mainly in tropical regions. The disease is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes who feed on the human body. The mosquito will have been infected by a parasite. Malaria symptoms will appear within about three weeks of being bitten by an infected mosquito. The first signs will include shaking and shivering, followed by a fever, before returning to the normal temperature. They may also include a headache, vomiting and fatigue. In serious cases, they may include yellow skin, seizures, a coma or even death. It is therefore important to treat the disease at once. With treatment, it is likely that the malaria will get better within a week or two. Without treatment, it is likely that it will return regularly and will become life-threatening.

Sepsis

A number of the diseases described above may lead to conditions that deteriorate suddenly such as sepsis. Sepsis is caused by a bacterial or viral infection and affects multiple organs or the whole body. The bacterial infection is the most common type of infection and is caused by the individual's reaction to the infection. Symptoms may include discoloured patches of skin, fever, a change in mental ability, regular urinating, breathing difficulties, abnormal heartbeat, a drop in temperature, or losing consciousness. Serious cases of sepsis may lead to septic shock. It is a serious condition with blood clots forming throughout the body, preventing the blood and oxygen flow to the organs and parts of the body. Sepsis and septic shock are life-threatening.

Meningitis

If not treated immediately, this is a very serious disease, though also very rare. It is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Bacterial meningitis is rarer but more serious than viral meningitis. It can develop within a matter of hours and can be life-threatening. It is described as an infection of the protective membrane around the brain and the spinal cord. It is triggered when bacteria from the ears, throat or sinuses finds its way into the blood. The bacteria that causes meningitis can spread when an infected person coughs and sneezes. It is more likely to affect babies and children, teenagers and young adults. Symptoms may include a high temperature, headache, vomiting, cold feet and hands, a rash, a pale appearance, pain and stiffness in the neck and a sensitivity to light. These are very similar to flu symptoms, so it is very difficult to recognise meningitis but the symptoms may be different in babies and older children. If a rash appears, the glass test may be used to see whether the rash is associated with meningitis. The side of the glass should be pressed against the rash. If the rash does not lose its colour under the pressure from the glass, a doctor should be contacted immediately.

Gall salwch a heintiau gael eu trosglwyddo yn hawdd o un plentyn i’r llall. Bydd y plentyn yn mynd yn sâl gan fod rhywbeth yn atal swyddogaeth y corff rhag gweithio’n effeithiol. Mae’n bwysig gwybod am wahanol salwch a heintiau gan fod llawer ohonynt yn dechrau gyda’r un arwyddion. Mae’r gofal cychwynnol sydd angen ar y plentyn yn gyffredin lle bydd angen triniaethau syml megis gorffwys, cadw’n oer, yfed digon. Bydd angen ymateb yn fwy cyflym os yw’r salwch neu effeithiau’n profi’n fwy difrifol. Gelwir yr organebau sy’n achosi’r salwch yn bathogenau, neu ‘germau’ fel y’i gelwir bob dydd. Gall arwyddion salwch a heintiau mewn plant gynnwys gwres uchel, dolur gwddf, cur pen, brech ar y corff neu ddolur rhydd. Gall germau fod ar ffurf bacteria, firysau, ffyngau a pharasitiaid. Mae’n bwysig adnabod y gall mathau o salwch ac afiechydon mewn plentyndod arwain at ddirywiad llym megis Sepsis os na chaiff yr arwyddion eu hadnabod a’u trin yn briodol.

Bacteria

Gwenwyn bwyd

Afiechyd a gaiff ei achosi wrth fwyta bwyd sydd wedi’i halogi (contaminated). Bydd y bwyd gan amlaf wedi’i halogi gan facteria megis Salmonela neu Escherichia coli (E.coli). Rhaid sicrhau hylendid bwyd er mwyn atal gwenwyn bwyd. Gall bacteria fynd i mewn i’r bwyd heb ddangos unrhyw arwyddion penodol megis arogli neu flasu’n wael. Gall sawl math gwahanol o facteria achosi gwenwyn bwyd ac mae arwyddion pob un yn gwahaniaethu. Gall arwyddion gynnwys cyfogi, cur pen, poen abdomenol, anhawster anadlu, gweld dwbl, gwenwyn gwaed a llid yr ymennydd.

Twbercwlosis

Haint sy’n lledaenu drwy anadlu defnynnau (droplets) wrth i berson heintus besychu a thisian. Gall arwyddion gynnwys peswch, peswch gwaed, poen yn y frest wrth besychu, twymyn, colli pwysau a niwed i’r ysgyfaint. Os yw’n effeithio’r ysgyfaint gall, y bacteria wneud twll ynddi. Gall effeithio unrhyw ran o’r corff gan gynnwys yr esgyrn, y chwarennau (glands) a’r system nerfol. Mae’n gyflwr difrifol ond gellir ei wella drwy dderbyn triniaeth briodol. Gwelir yr unigolyn yn datblygu’r salwch yn gyflym ar ôl cael ei heintio ond efallai na fydd yn effeithio ar y person am flynyddoedd. Bydd yn taro pan fydd y system imiwnedd yn wan am ryw reswm. Heb driniaeth gall fod yn beryg bywyd.

MRSA (meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)

Mae’r haint hwn yn anos i’w drin nag unrhyw haint arall gan ei fod yn medru gwrthsefyll sawl gwrthfiotig cyffredin. Gall arwyddion haint y croen arddangos fel talpau bach coch. Bydd y croen wedi chwyddo, yn frau (tender) neu’n gynnes wrth ei gyffwrdd. Mae’n salwch heintus iawn ac yn medru cael ei ledaenu drwy gyffwrdd â’r person sydd â’r haint neu wrth gyffwrdd ag arwynebau neu wrthrychau sydd wedi’u halogi. Er bod haint MRSA yn un difrifol, gellir ei drin yn effeithiol gyda gwrthfiotig.

Dysentri

Llid o’r coluddyn sy’n achosi cramp ysgafn neu ddifrifol yn y stumog yn ogystal â dolur rhydd difrifol gyda mwcws (mucus) a gwaed yn y carthion (faeces). Gall hefyd achosi cyfogi a chwydu. Gall yr haint glirio ohono ei hun mewn rhwng tri a saith diwrnod ond os yw’n parhau caiff ei drin gan gwrs o wrthfiotig. Os na fydd y corff yn gallu derbyn hylif yn gyflym neu os gadewir y cyflwr heb ei drin, gall fod yn beryg bywyd. Caiff yr haint ei drosglwyddo’n hawdd ac felly mae’n bwysig ymarfer hylendid dwylo manwl a chywir.

Broncitis

Haint a llid ar y frest sy’n effeithio’r prif lwybrau anadlu. Bydd y plentyn yn pesychu’n rheolaidd ac efallai’n codi fflem werdd neu felyn. Gall wneud sŵn wrth anadlu, bydd yn teimlo’n sâl iawn a bydd ganddo wres uchel. Gall y bacteria sy’n achosi broncitis droi’n niwmonia. Gall hefyd gythruddo symptomau asthma. Os ceir y driniaeth gywir dylai’r broncitis wella o fewn tair i bedair wythnos, ond efallai bydd y peswch yn parhau yn hwy.

Heintiau yn y glust

Bydd y plentyn yn teimlo’n sâl ac efallai’n tynnu ar ei glust neu’n ei rhwbio. Efallai bydd rhedlif yn dod o’r glust a bydd gan y plentyn wres sydd yn uwch nag arfer. Weithiau, bydd haint yn y glust yn datblygu ar ôl annwyd. Gall y glust deimlo’n llawn ac o bryd i’w gilydd bydd yn popian ac fe fydd sŵn suo yn y glust. Mwy na thebyg, bydd yn effeithio ar glyw'r plentyn ac mae’n bwysig ymweld â’r meddyg a chael triniaeth er mwyn osgoi niwed parhaol i’r glust.

Streptococws

Haint sy’n cael ei achosi gan grŵp o facteria a elwir yn streptococws. Bydd yr haint yn amrywio o haint yn y gwddf i fod yn llawer mwy difrifol, megis niwmonia. Gall arwyddion haint y gwddf gynnwys twymyn sydyn, gwddf yn ddolurus ac yn goch gyda mannau gwyn, anhawster llyncu, cur pen a chyfnodau o grynu. Bydd angen cael ei drin gan gwrs o wrthfiotig.

Tonsilitis

Bydd y gwddf yn ddolurus a bydd yr haint yn lledaenu i’r tonsiliau gan achosi iddynt chwyddo. Bydd y meinwe yn chwyddo ac yn llidus (inflamed) ac yn achosi llawer o boen i’r plentyn. Bydd yn cael anhawster bwyta ac yn sgil hyn yn gwrthod bwyta. Efallai bydd yn chwyrnu wrth gysgu gan ei fod yn cael anhawster wrth anadlu. Os caiff ei adael heb ei drin, gall achosi haint y glust a’r sinws. Os bydd y plentyn yn cael tonsilitis yn rheolaidd, efallai bydd y meddyg yn awgrymu llawdriniaeth i’w tynnu.

Firysau

Ffliw

Salwch cyffredin sy’n lledaenu trwy beswch a thisian. Gellir hefyd ei ddal trwy fod yn agos i rywun sydd â’r salwch neu wrth gyffwrdd ag arwynebau neu wrthrychau sydd wedi’u halogi. Mae’n fwy cyffredin yn ystod tymor y gaeaf ond gellir dal y salwch drwy’r flwyddyn. Gall arwyddion gynnwys twymyn, cyfnodau yn rhynnu, peswch , dolur gwddf, y corff a’r esgyrn yn brifo, blinder ac efallai bydd rhai plant yn chwydu ac yn cael dolur rhydd. Er bod y ffliw a’r annwyd yn rhannu rhai o’r un symptomau, maent yn gwbl wahanol; maent yn cael ei achosi gan firws gwahanol. Bydd y cyflwr yn parhau am tuag wythnos neu ddwy ond bydd y symptomau difrifol wedi cilio ymhen dau neu dri diwrnod. Y feddyginiaeth orau i drin y ffliw yw gorffwys ac yfed digon.

Annwyd

Mae plant yn dal llawer o anwydau gan fod llawer o firysau annwyd ar gael. Bydd y trwyn yn rhedeg ac efallai bydd yn pesychu a thisian llawer. Wrth iddynt dyfu’n hŷn, byddant yn datblygu imiwnedd ac yn dal llai o anwydau. Ni fydd gwrthfiotigau yn gwella annwyd ond mae’n bwysig bod y plentyn yn yfed digon ac yn cael bwyd sy’n hawdd i’w lyncu. Mae angen cadw’r trwyn yn glir er mwyn anadlu’n haws a gellid defnyddio eli menthol gyda’r nos a fydd yn helpu hyn.

Ffliw’r stumog

Mae hefyd yn cael ei alw’n gastroenteritis. Mae’n lledaenu trwy gyffwrdd ag arwynebau neu wrthrychau sydd wedi’u halogi a thrwy fwyta bwyd neu ddŵr heintiedig. Bydd y plentyn yn gyffredinol sâl; gydag annwyd a pheswch. Gydag amser, bydd yn dirywio gan ddangos arwyddion o chwydu, dolur rhydd difrifol, cramp yn y stumog a thwymyn. Bydd hyn yn eu tro yn achosi diffyg hylif lle bydd y geg a’r croen yn sychu a bydd y plentyn yn pasio llai o wrin. Mewn babanod, bydd pen blaen y ffontanél yn suddo. Bydd angen rhoi digon o ddŵr i’r plentyn a hefyd hydoddiannau ail-hydradu (Rehydration Solution) drwy’r geg. Efallai bydd angen triniaeth yn yr ysbyty ar fabanod.

Niwmonia

Gelwir y salwch hefyd yn llid yr ysgyfaint. Mae’n llid heintus sy’n effeithio ar yr ysgyfaint ac mae’n gallu lledaenu o un person i’r llall. Mae’n effeithio ar y codenni aer (air sacks) yn yr ysgyfaint. Bydd y rhain yn llenwi gyda hylif sydd yn effeithio ar y gallu i anadlu. Mae’n salwch eithaf cyffredin a gall achosi marwolaeth mewn plant dan bump oed, yr henoed a’r rheiny sydd yn wan. Gwelir fod niwmonia yn fwy cyffredin yn y gaeaf gan fod annwyd a ffliw sy’n cael ei ledaenu o un person i’r llall hefyd yn fwy cyffredin yn y gaeaf. Gall arwyddion o’r salwch gynnwys peswch gydag efallai mwcws gwyrdd/melyn, twymyn, prinder anadl, poen yn y frest sy’n gwaethygu wrth besychu neu anadlu’n ddwfn, blinder, prinder egni a dim chwant bwyd. Er y bydd plentyn yn teimlo’n sâl iawn gyda niwmonia firaol (viral), bydd yn gwella ohono ei hun. Bydd angen gwrthfiotig i wella niwmonia bacteriol.

Ffyngau

Tarwden y traed

Mae hwn yn haint sydd, gan amlaf, yn dechrau rhwng bysedd y traed. Gall ddigwydd os yw’r traed yn chwysu llawer neu os yw’r esgidiau’n rhy dynn. Bydd yn ymddangos fel brech gennog (scaly rash) sydd yn cosi, yn pigo ac yn llosgi. Weithiau, bydd yn ymddangos fel pothelli neu wlser. Gall effeithio un neu ddwy droed gan ledaenu i’r dwylo, yn enwedig os ydych yn crafu yn rheolaidd neu yn pigo ar fannau heintus o’r droed. Gall ledaenu trwy gysylltiad â thywelion, dillad neu loriau sydd wedi’u halogi. Gall triniaeth gynnwys meddyginiaeth wrth-ffwngaidd (antifungal) y gellir ei brynu mewn siop fferyllydd. Gellir hefyd cael meddyginiaeth ar bresgripsiwn. Os yw’n cael ei adael heb ei drin, gall effeithio ar ewinedd y traed a hefyd y dwylo

.

Y Darwden

Mae’n ymddangos ar y croen fel cylch coch wedi’i godi, gyda’r canol yn wyn ac yn gennog (scaly). Gellir dal y ddarwden oddi wrth anifeiliaid. Mae’n cosi’n ddifrifol a gellir ei weld ar y corff ac ar groen y pen. Mae’r ddarwden yn byw ar y celloedd yn yr haenen allanol o’r croen. Bydd yn lledaenu wrth gael cyswllt uniongyrchol â chroen person heintus. Bydd angen cysylltu â’r meddyg a fydd yn rhoi hylif gwrthfiotig ar gyfer gwella’r darwden. Dylai wella’n gyflym yn dilyn triniaeth ond bydd angen parhau gyda’r driniaeth am ryw ddwy i bedair wythnos er mwyn sicrhau bod y ffwng (fungus) yn diflannu’n llwyr.

Heintiau burum Llindag (thrush)

Mae’r haint yn ffurfio mannau gwyn ar y tafod, a thu mewn i’r bochau a’r gwefusau. Bydd rhwbio’r ffwng i ffwrdd yn gadael marciau coch, dolurus. Gall hefyd effeithio ar ben ôl y baban gan y bydd y llindag yn effeithio’r croen lle mae’r clwt yn cyffwrdd. Er mwyn cael gwared â’r haint, bydd angen cysylltu â’r meddyg i gael triniaeth wrth-ffwngaidd. Mae’n medru cael ei drosglwyddo o un plentyn i’r llall, felly, mae’n bwysig bod offer bwydo yn cael ei ddiheintio’n rheolaidd.

  • gall haint burum, megis llindag, gael ei drin gan gegolch meddyginiaethol (medicated mouthwash) neu losin (lozenges)
  • gall heintiau burum ar y croen gael ei drin gyda meddyginiaeth megis hylif i’w rhoi ar y croen
  • gall heintiau burum yn y fagina neu’r pen ôl cael ei drin gan hylif neu dawddgyffur (suppository)

Parasitiaid

Llyngyr

Maent yn byw yn y perfedd ac yn ymddangos fel mwydod bach gwyn. Gellir gweld y rhain yn y carthion. Maent yn dodwy eu hwyau o amgylch y pen ôl ac mae hyn yn gwneud i’r plentyn gosi. Wrth gosi, bydd yr wyau’n cael eu trosglwyddo i’r bysedd ac o dan yr ewinedd. Wrth i’r plentyn roi ei fysedd yn ei geg bydd yn llyncu’r wyau a bydd y rhain yn deor yn y perfedd. Bydd hyn yn cylchdroi. Wrth gosi a chrafu’n rheolaidd, bydd y pen ôl yn ddolurus a bydd yn effeithio ar gwsg y plentyn. Gall arwyddion eraill gynnwys dim chwant bwyd, poen abdomenol, ymchwyddo (bloating), cyfogi, colli pwysau a phoen yn y stumog. Bydd angen sicrhau hylendid da i bawb yn y tŷ gan gynnwys golchi dwylo ar ôl bod yn y toiled, cyn bwyta a chadw’r ewinedd yn fyr. Bydd hefyd angen newid a golchi dillad, dillad nos a dillad gwely yn gyson.

Malaria

Gwelir malaria mewn nifer o wledydd ond yn bennaf mewn rhanbarthau trofannol. Caiff yr afiechyd ei drosglwyddo i gyrff dynol gan y pryfyn, mosgito sy’n bwydo o’r corff. Bydd y mosgito wedi cael ei heintio gan barasit (parasite). Mae arwyddion malaria yn dangos o fewn rhyw dair wythnos ar ôl brathiad y mosgito heintus. Bydd yr arwyddion cyntaf yn cynnwys cryndod a rhynnu ac yna twymyn, cyn dychwelyd i’r tymheredd arferol. Gall hefyd gynnwys cur pen, chwydu a blinder. Mewn achosion difrifol, gall achosi croen melyn, trawiad (seizures) coma neu hyd yn oed farwolaeth. Mae’n bwysig felly i drin yr afiechyd ar unwaith. Gyda thriniaeth, mae’n debygol y bydd y malaria’n gwella o fewn wythnos neu ddwy. Heb driniaeth, mae’n debygol y bydd yn dychwelyd yn rheolaidd gan fod yn beryg bywyd.

Sepsis

Gall nifer o’r afiechydon a ddisgrifir uchod arwain at gyflyrau dirywiad llym megis Sepsis. Mae’n cael ei achosi gan haint bacteriol neu feiriol ac yn effeithio ar organau lluosog neu’r corff cyfan. Yr haint bacteriol sydd fwyaf cyffredin ac mae’n cael ei achosi gan ymateb yr unigolyn i’r haint. Gall symptomau gynnwys darnau croen afliwiedig (discoloured), twymyn, newid mewn gallu meddyliol, pasio dŵr yn gyson, anhawster anadlu, swyddogaeth y galon yn annormal, cwymp mewn tymheredd, neu fynd yn anymwybodol. Gall achosion difrifol o Sepsis arwain at Sioc Septig (Septic Shock). Mae’n gyflwr difrifol gyda chlotiau gwaed yn ffurfio trwy’r corff a fydd yn atal rhediad gwaed ac ocsigen i organau a rhannau o’r corff. Mae Sepsis a Sioc Septig yn beryg bywyd.

Llid yr ymennydd

Mae’n afiechyd difrifol os na chaiff ei drin yn syth ond yn un anghyffredin iawn. Fel arfer, caiff ei achosi gan haint bacteriol neu feiriol. Mae llid yr ymennydd bacteriol yn fwy anghyffredin ond yn fwy difrifol na llid yr ymennydd feirol. Gall ddatblygu o fewn oriau gan fod yn beryg bywyd. Disgrifir fel haint o’r bilen amddiffynnol (protective membrane) sy’n amgylchynu’r ymennydd a llinyn y cefn (spinal cord). Mae’n cychwyn wrth i facteria o’r clustiau, gwddf neu’r sinws ddarganfod ffordd i’r gwaed. Gall y bacteria sy’n achosi llid yr ymennydd ledaenu wrth i berson heintus besychu a thisian. Mae’n fwy tebygol o effeithio ar fabanod a phlant, plant yn eu harddegau ac oedolion ifanc. Gall arwyddion gynnwys tymheredd uchel, cur pen, chwydu, dwylo a thraed oer, brech, llwyd yr edrychiad, poen ac anystwythder yn y gwddf a sensitifrwydd i olau. Mae’r rhain yn debyg iawn i symptomau’r ffliw, felly mae’n anodd iawn adnabod llid yr ymennydd ond gall y symptomau fod yn wahanol i fabanod a phlant hŷn. Os oes yna frech, gellir defnyddio’r prawf gwydryn i weld a yw’r frech yn un sy’n cael ei gysylltu â llid yr ymennydd. Bydd rhaid gwasgu ochr gwydryn yn erbyn y frech. Os na fydd y frech yn colli ei liw dan bwysau’r gwydr bydd rhaid cysylltu â’r meddyg ar unwaith.

                How infections are transmitted

Sut mae heintiau yn cael eu trosglwyddo

                Someone washing their hands

Diseases are caused by pathogens. A common word for pathogens is germs. The most familiar germs are bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Germs will enter the body and will spread very quickly. This period is called the incubation period and will last from between a few days to a period of weeks, depending on the disease.

                Infections are transmitted through:

                • Droplet infection when coughing, sneezing, speaking. Small droplets will come out of the nose and mouth. These droplets will be full of germs if the person has an infection. The infection will be transmitted if the other person inhales these germs into their body.
                • Touching a contaminated person or object. Infectious diseases may be caught by touching an infected person or by touching objects or towels that have been used by the infected person. This is how the MRSA infection or the skin condition impetigo spreads. Athlete's foot may also be caught in this way as feet come into contact with contaminated flooring.
                • Drinking contaminated water/eating contaminated food. If the food preparation area is dirty, food and drink may get contaminated. Also, if the hands of the person preparing the food are dirty. In places where a large number of children eat together, germs can spread very quickly and may cause food poisoning. Washing hands after going to the toilet and before preparing food is essential in order to prevent germs from spreading.
                • Wounds or scratches. If a child has a wound or a scratch on their body, germs may enter the body through the wound or scratch. It is important that the person who administers first aid to the child wears disposable gloves in order to protect the child and themselves. It is important to clean the wound/scratch using a medicinal product. An infection on the wound may hinder the healing process which, in its turn, will cause further damage to the tissue.
                • Animals. Insects, mice and black beetles carry germs and if they land on food or drink, they will contaminate them. Some animals feed themselves by sucking blood from humans and that is how diseases such as malaria are spread by mosquitoes.

Children who play in close proximity will transmit infections, maybe by coughing, sneezing, choking, speaking or singing (direct contact) or by touching dirty/infected objects (indirect contact). We can minimise this by ensuring good hygiene, hand washing and keeping everything as clean as possible.

Poor practice that may lead to the spread of infection:

                • not washing hands after going to the toilet
                • not washing hands before food preparation
                • not washing hands before eating or drinking
                • not washing hands before administering medication
                • not washing hands after handling animals
                • not putting your hand over your mouth when coughing or sneezing
                • not using a handkerchief
                • not wearing disposable gloves when administering first aid
                • not wearing disposable gloves when changing nappies
                • not using personal protection equipment
                • not staying home from school / work during an incubation period
                • not following the setting's guidelines on managing illness and infection
                • not being immunized at the appropriate times
                • not covering a wound or scratch
                • not maintaining good personal hygiene
                • not washing towels on a regular basis
                • not keeping your nails clean
                • sharing cups and utensils
                • not tying long hair back
                • not washing surfaces regularly
                • insufficient ventilation in the room
                • not washing toys on a regular basis
                • not checking the sand pit for dirt
                • not covering the sand pit if it is kept outdoors
                • not emptying the water pit on a daily basis
                • not covering the water pit if it is kept outdoors.

Pathogenau sy’n achosi afiechydon. Gair cyffredin am bathogenau yw germau. Y germau mwyaf adnabyddus yw bacteria, firysau, ffyngau a pharasitiaid. Bydd germau’n mynd i mewn i’r corff ac yn lledu’n gyflym iawn. Gelwir y cyfnod hwn yn gyfnod magu (incubation period) a bydd yn para o ychydig ddyddiau hyd at wythnosau, a hyn yn dibynnu ar yr afiechyd.

                Caiff heintiau eu trosglwyddo drwy:

                • Heintiad defnyn (droplet infection) wrth besychu, tisian, siarad. Bydd defnynnau bach yn dod allan o’r trwyn a’r geg. Bydd y defnynnau hyn yn llawn germau os oes gan y person haint. Bydd yr haint yn cael ei drosglwyddo os bydd person arall yn anadlu’r germau hyn i mewn i’w gorff.
                • Cyffwrdd â pherson neu wrthrych sydd wedi’i halogi Gellir dal clefydau heintus drwy gyffwrdd â pherson sydd wedi’i heintio neu drwy gyffwrdd â gwrthrychau neu dywelion y mae’r person heintus wedi’u defnyddio. Dyma sut mae’r haint MRSA neu’r cyflwr croen impetigo yn lledaenu. Gellir hefyd dal darwden y traed yn y modd yma wrth i’r traed gyffwrdd â lloriau sydd wedi’u halogi.
                • Yfed dŵr/ bwyta bwyd heintiedig Os bydd yr ardal paratoi bwyd yn fudr, gall bwyd a dŵr gael eu halogi. Yn yr un modd, os yw dwylo’r person sy’n paratoi’r bwyd yn fudr. Mewn llefydd lle gwelir llawer o blant yn bwyta gyda’i gilydd, gall germau ledaenu’n gyflym iawn gan achosi gwenwyn bwyd. Mae golchi dwylo ar ôl bod yn y toiled a chyn paratoi bwyd yn hollbwysig i atal germau rhag lledaenu.
                • Briw neu grafiad Os bydd gan blentyn friw neu grafiad ar ei gorff, gall germau fynd i mewn i’r corff drwyddynt. Mae’n bwysig bod y person sy’n rhoi cymorth cyntaf i’r plentyn yn gwisgo menig tafladwy a hyn er mwyn amddiffyn y plentyn a’u hunain. Mae’n bwysig glanhau’r briw/crafiad gan ddefnyddio cynnyrch meddyginiaethol (medicinal product). Gall heintiad ar y briw arafu’r broses gwella a fydd, yn ei dro, yn niweidio’r meinwe (tissue) ymhellach.
                • Anifeiliaid Mae pryfed, llygod a chwilod duon yn cludo germau ac os wnânt ddisgyn ar fwydydd neu ddiodydd, byddant yn eu halogi. Mae rhai anifeiliaid yn bwydo eu hunain drwy sugno gwaed o’r corff dynol a dyma sut mae clefydau megis malaria yn lledaenu gan y pryfyn mosgito.

Bydd plant sy'n chwarae'n agos gyda'i gilydd yn trosglwyddo heintiau, efallai drwy besychu, tisian, tagu, siarad neu ganu (cysylltiad uniongyrchol) neu drwy gyffwrdd â phethau budr/heintus (cysylltiad anuniongyrchol). Gallwn leihau hyn drwy sicrhau hylendid da, golchi dwylo a chadw popeth mor lân â phosibl.

Arfer gwael a all arwain at ledaenu haint:

                • peidio golchi dwylo ar ôl bod yn y toiled
                • peidio golchi dwylo cyn paratoi bwyd
                • peidio golchi dwylo cyn bwyta neu yfed
                • peidio golchi dwylo cyn rhoi meddyginiaeth
                • peidio golchi dwylo ar ôl trin anifeiliaid
                • peidio rhoi llaw dros y geg wrth besychu neu disian
                • peidio defnyddio hances
                • peidio gwisgo menig tafladwy wrth gynnig cymorth cyntaf
                • peidio gwisgo menig tafladwy wrth newid cewyn (nappy)
                • peidio defnyddio cyfarpar diogelu personol
                • peidio aros gartref o’r ysgol / gwaith yn ystod cyfnod magu (incubation period)
                • peidio dilyn canllawiau’r lleoliad ar reoli salwch a heintiad
                • peidio derbyn imiwneiddiad (immunization) ar yr amser penodol
                • peidio gorchuddio briw neu grafiad
                • peidio dilyn trefn hylendid personol da
                • peidio golchi tywelion yn rheolaidd
                • peidio cadw ewinedd yn lân
                • rhannu cwpanau a theclynnau (utensils)
                • peidio clymu gwallt hir yn ôl
                • peidio glanhau arwynebau yn gyson
                • dim digon o awyriad (ventilation) yn yr ystafell
                • peidio golchi teganau’n rheolaidd
                • peidio gwirio’r twba tywod am faw
                • peidio gorchuddio’r twba tywod os yw yn yr ardal allanol
                • peidio gwagio’r twba dŵr yn ddyddiol
                • peidio gorchuddio’r twba dŵr os yw yn yr ardal allanol.

Factors that will make it more likely that infections will occur

Ffactorau sy’n gwneud heintiau’n fwy tebygol

A young girl wearing a respirator

We have already studied how poor practice may lead to the spread of infection and how it is therefore important to ensure good practice in early years and childcare settings. In order to improve and maintain good health in children, it is important to be able to identify the factors that may affect their health. These factors may include poverty, lifestyle, genetic cases, age, diet and exercise, allergies and environmental factors.

                Poverty

Poverty is the main factor that affects children's health. The family/carers will not have enough money to buy food, especially healthy food. This will contribute to health problems, causing common infections. The condition of their home may be unsuitable as they struggle to pay bills, such as rent, electricity and water. This may cause respiratory conditions such as bronchitis or pneumonia. Houses may be overpopulated with adults and children, making it more likely that infections will spread quickly. Infections such as tuberculosis, bronchitis and gastroenteritis are more common in overpopulated houses and housing which is in poor condition. This may all contribute to the development of infection in children.

                Lifestyle

Parents/carers' lifestyle can affect the health of their children. Parents may have special needs, they may be victims of domestic abuse or alcohol and drug abuse. As a result, the care that the children receive deteriorates and they become more likely to develop infections. The parents and the children will be vulnerable as a result of their situation. If the parent is alcohol and/or drug dependent during the pregnancy, this may have a significant affect on the health of the foetus in the womb, which, in turn, will affect the child's immunity system and health in the long term.

                Genetic cases

The way your genes are produced is irreversible and everybody will develop factors from their parents that are unavoidable. Although these are not direct infections, they may develop into infections without the appropriate treatment, e.g. conditions such as asthma or eczema.

                Age

A baby is more susceptible to infections and illnesses than older people as their immune system is not yet fully developed to be able to fight the diseases.

                Diet and exercise

Children need a combination of a healthy diet and exercise. Receiving the correct nutrients will contribute towards good health as they help to fight diseases. Although some children will seem to be eating plenty, they may not be eating the correct balance of nutrients that the body requires. This may cause obesity in children and will put a strain on their heart. Exercise is necessary to develop healthily and to promote the child's development. As well as developing infections, poor diet may cause diseases such as tooth decay, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

                Allergies

Some children are allergic to different things e.g. hay, animal hair, pollen or dust particles. The immune system can attack the infection in the body by producing antibodies. Unfortunately, if a child has allergies, this is not the case. The child should avoid eating the foods they are allergic to and should avoid coming into contact with anything that causes a reaction. Failure to do so may lead to serious illness in children.

                Environmental factors

High levels of pollution in the air may cause coughing and breathing difficulties, especially in children who have asthma or lung conditions. This is an increasing concern in cities and in areas where children live in close proximity to the motorway as they are inhaling high levels of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. If the water supply becomes contaminated, this may affect the health of individuals and cause stomach bugs. If there are problems with the sewage and waste system, this may cause infections such as polio or typhoid.

Rydym eisoes wedi astudio sut y gall arfer gwael arwain at ledaenu haint ac mae’n bwysig felly i gynnal arfer da mewn lleoliadau blynyddoedd cynnar a gofal plant. Er mwyn gwella a chynnal iechyd da ymhlith plant, mae’n bwysig medru adnabod y ffactorau sy’n gallu effeithio ar eu hiechyd. Gall y ffactorau yma gynnwys tlodi, ffordd o fyw, achosion genetig, oedran, diet ac ymarfer corff, alergeddau a ffactorau amgylcheddol.

                Tlodi

Tlodi ydy’r prif ffactor sy’n effeithio ar iechyd plant. Nid oes gan y teulu/gofalwyr ddigon o arian i brynu bwydydd, yn enwedig bwydydd iach. Bydd hyn yn cyfrannu at broblemau iechyd gan achosi heintiau cyffredin. Gall cyflwr y tai maent yn byw ynddo fod yn anaddas gan eu bod yn cael anhawster talu biliau megis rhent, trydan a dŵr. Gall hyn achosi cyflyrau anadlol megis broncitis neu niwmonia. Efallai bydd y tai yn orlawn o ran niferoedd oedolion a phlant gan ei gwneud yn fwy tebygol bod heintiau yn lledaenu’n gyflym. Mae heintiau megis twbercwlosis, broncitis a gastroenteritis yn fwy cyffredin mewn tai gorlawn a’r rheiny mewn cyflwr gwael. Gall hyn oll gyfrannu at ddatblygu heintiau ymhlith plant.

                Ffordd o fyw

Gall y ffordd y mae rhieni/gofalwyr yn byw effeithio ar iechyd eu plant. Gall rhieni/gofalwyr fod ag anghenion arbennig, yn ddioddefwyr camdriniaeth ddomestig neu yn cam-drin alcohol a chyffuriau. Yn sgil hyn, bydd y gofal y mae’r plant yn ei dderbyn yn dirywio ac yn eu gwneud yn fwy tebygol o ddatblygu heintiau. Bydd y rhieni/gofalwyr a’r plant yn fregus oherwydd y sefyllfa y maent ynddi. Os ydy rhiant/gofalwr yn gaeth i alcohol a/neu gyffuriau yn ystod cyfnod beichiogrwydd mae hynny yn gallu effeithio’n sylweddol ar iechyd y ffoetws yn y groth, a fydd, yn ei dro, yn effeithio ar system imiwnedd ac iechyd y plentyn yn y tymor hir.

                Achosion genetig

Ni allwch newid y modd mae eich genynnau wedi eu cynhyrchu ac mae pawb yn datblygu ffactorau oddi wrth eu rhieni/gofalwyr na ellir eu hosgoi. Er nad yw’r rhain yn heintiau uniongyrchol gallant droi yn haint os na dderbynnir y driniaeth briodol, e.e. cyflyrau megis asthma neu ecsema.

                Oedran

Mae baban yn fwy tebygol o godi heintiau a salwch na phobl hŷn oherwydd nad yw ei system imiwnedd wedi datblygu’n llawn eto i fedru ymladd yr afiechydon.

                Diet ac ymarfer corff

Mae plant angen cyfuniad o ddiet iach ac ymarfer corff. Bydd derbyn maetholion cywir yn cyfrannu tuag at iechyd da gan fod yn gymorth i ymladd afiechydon. Er bod ambell blentyn yn arddangos ei fod yn bwyta llawer, efallai nad yw’n bwyta’r cyfrannau cywir o’r maetholion sydd eu hangen ar y corff. Gall hyn achosi gordewdra mewn plant a fydd yn rhoi straen ar y galon. Mae angen ymarfer corff i ddatblygu’n iach ac i hyrwyddo datblygiad y plentyn. Yn ogystal â datblygu heintiau, gall ddiet gwael achosi afiechydon megis pydredd dannedd, gorbwysedd, clefyd y siwgr, afiechyd cardiofasgwlaidd (cardiovascular) a chancr.

                Alergeddau

Mae gan rai plant alergedd tuag at fwydydd gwahanol, e.e. gwair, blew anifeiliaid, paill neu ronynnau llwch (dust particles). Mae’r system imiwnedd yn medru erlid yr haint yn y corff drwy gynhyrchu gwrthgorffynnau (antibodies). Yn anffodus, mewn plentyn sy’n dioddef o alergeddau, nid yw hyn yn digwydd. Mae angen sicrhau nad yw’r plentyn yn bwyta’r bwydydd y mae ganddo alergedd iddo nac yn dod mewn cysylltiad ag unrhyw beth arall sy’n achosi ymateb. Gall peidio â chydymffurfio â hyn achosi afiechyd difrifol mewn plant.

                Ffactorau amgylcheddol

Gall lefelau uchel o lygredd yn yr aer achosi peswch a thrafferthion anadlu, yn enwedig mewn plant sy’n dioddef o asthma neu sydd â chyflyrau o’r ysgyfaint. Mae hyn yn broblem sy’n cynyddu o fewn dinasoedd ac mewn ardaloedd lle mae plant yn byw yn agos at y draffordd gan eu bod yn anadlu lefelau uchel o garbon monocsid a charbon deuocsid. Os bydd y cyflenwad dŵr yn cael ei halogi, gall effeithio ar iechyd person gan achosi ffliw’r stumog. Os bydd problemau gyda’r system garffosiaeth a gwastraff, gall achosi haint megis polio neu deiffoid.

Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013

Workers in early years or childcare settings have a duty to report accidents, occupational diseases and dangerous occurrences in the workplace. The record book will need to be completed and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Care Inspectorate will need to be informed if appropriate. Workers should be aware that children are susceptible to infectious diseases and that they have a responsibility to keep each child at the setting safe. The setting's policy on how to record infectious illnesses and diseases must be followed.

Rheoliadau Adrodd ar Anafiadau, Clefydau neu Ddigwyddiadau Peryglus 2013

Mae dyletswydd ar weithwyr mewn lleoliad blynyddoedd cynnar neu ofal plant i roi gwybod am ddamweiniau, clefydau galwedigaethol a digwyddiadau peryglus o fewn y gweithle. Bydd angen llenwi’r llyfr cofnodion a rhoi gwybod i’r Awdurdod Gweithredol Iechyd a Diogelwch AGID (HSE) ac Arolygiaeth Gofal os yw hynny’n briodol. Dylai gweithwyr fod yn ymwybodol bod plant yn codi afiechydon heintus a’u bod â chyfrifoldeb i gadw pob plentyn yn y lleoliad yn ddiogel. Rhaid dilyn polisi’r lleoliad ar sut i gofnodi salwch ac afiechydon heintus.
