Childcare workers, parents/carers and professionals have a responsibility to ensure the safety of and prevent the abuse of children and young people. It is crucial that they support children and encourage them to learn how to protect themselves. This will allow them to protect themselves now and in future. There are six stages in the child protection process based on the All Wales Child Protection Procedures 2008:

An employee who referred a child may be worried that concerns about harm, abuse or neglect have not been addressed. If this is the case, they need to contact the line manager and the child protection professional. In addition, they need to contact the social worker named to deal with the process. If this is not possible they must contact the social services senior manager involved in child protection. If the agency or setting decides to work independently, the team manager and relevant workers must be informed. The Chair of the Local Child Safeguarding Board is also informed to ensure that a consultation process is in place. Furthermore, a child protection review conference is arranged if necessary.
