Parental substance misuse can have an impact on the health and development of their children, from before a baby is born all the way through to when they are an adult themselves.

Gall camddefnyddio sylweddau gan rieni gael effaith ar iechyd a datblygiad eu plant, o'r cyfnod cyn i faban gael ei eni nes bydd y plentyn ei hun yn oedolyn.

Parents substance misuse

There is a serious risk that parents will neglect their children as their focus is on obtaining drugs and alcohol, and while under the influence of drugs or alcohol they are not able to pay sufficient attention to their children’s needs.

Such neglect can have a negative impact on children’s health, their emotional and physical development, their education and put them at risk of physical and sexual abuse.

Health and social care services need to ensure that they have planned successful interventions to support these families through holistic approaches that target the family’s:

  • day-to-day functioning
  • psychological functioning of family members
  • parent-child relationship
  • social factors such as the family’s support network, housing and financial situation.

Mae risg difrifol y bydd rhieni yn esgeuluso eu plant gan eu bod yn canolbwyntio ar gael cyffuriau ac alcohol, a phan maen nhw o dan ddylanwad cyffuriau neu alcohol dydyn nhw ddim yn gallu rhoi sylw digonol i anghenion eu plant.

Gall esgeulustod o'r fath gael effaith negyddol ar iechyd plant, eu datblygiad corfforol ac emosiynol a’u haddysg a'u rhoi mewn perygl o ddioddef cam-drin corfforol a rhywiol.

Mae angen i wasanaethau iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol sicrhau eu bod wedi cynllunio mesurau ymyrraeth llwyddiannus i gefnogi'r teuluoedd hyn drwy ddulliau holistaidd sy'n targedu anghenion y teulu o ran:

  • gweithrediad o ddydd i ddydd
  • gweithrediad seicolegol aelodau'r teulu
  • y berthynas rhwng y rhiant a'r plentyn
  • ffactorau cymdeithasol fel rhwydwaith cymorth y teulu, a’r sefyllfa o ran tai ac arian.
