Food poverty means that an individual cannot afford or lacks the ability to prepare the nutritious food needed to lead a healthy life.

Mae tlodi bwyd yn golygu nad yw unigolyn yn gallu fforddio’r bwyd maethlon sydd ei angen i fyw bywyd iach, neu nid yw’n gwybod sut i’w baratoi.

Food bank

It can be caused by a crisis in finance or personal circumstances, but may also be a long-term experience of not being able to access a healthy diet or afford to eat well.

Despite increasing choice and affordability of food, many individuals in food poverty eat more of the low quality foods as these are the more affordable and accessible option.

It can affect children who lack free school meals during the holidays and their parents going without food so that their children can eat.

It can also affect those who lack the ability to prepare healthy food for themselves such as the elderly who are unable to prepare a nutritious meal without help.

Individuals on low incomes have the lowest intakes of fruit and vegetables and are far more likely to suffer from diet-related diseases such as cancer, diabetes, obesity and heart disease.

The Welsh Government is working with Public Health Wales and a range of stakeholders (organisations with an interest or concern in the well-being of individuals) to identify and take forward key actions in Wales that can help to reduce the risk of individuals experiencing food poverty.

This issue has seen the rise of the number of Food Banks throughout Wales.

Gall gael ei achosi gan argyfwng ariannol neu amgylchiadau personol, ond gall hefyd fod yn brofiad tymor hir o beidio â gallu dilyn deiet iach neu o beidio â gallu fforddio bwyta'n dda.

Er gwaethaf y dewis cynyddol a'r ffaith bod bwyd yn fwy fforddiadwy, mae llawer o unigolion mewn tlodi bwyd yn bwyta mwy o'r bwydydd ansawdd isel gan eu bod yn ddewis mwy fforddiadwy ac yn haws eu cael.

Gall effeithio ar blant nad ydyn nhw'n cael prydau ysgol am ddim yn ystod y gwyliau gan olygu bod eu rhieni yn mynd heb fwyd er mwyn i’w plant allu bwyta.

Gall hefyd effeithio ar unigolion nad ydyn nhw'n gallu paratoi bwyd iach ar gyfer eu hunain fel yr henoed sydd yn methu paratoi pryd maethlon heb gymorth.

Unigolion ar incwm isel sy'n bwyta'r lleiaf o ffrwythau a llysiau ac maen nhw'n llawer mwy tebygol o ddioddef o afiechydon sy'n gysylltiedig â deiet fel canser, diabetes, gordewdra a chlefyd y galon.

Mae Llywodraeth Cymru yn gweithio gydag Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru ac amryw o randdeiliaid (mudiadau â budd neu bryder am lesiant unigolion) i nodi a rhoi camau allweddol ar waith yng Nghymru all helpu i leihau'r risg bydd unigolion yn wynebu tlodi bwyd.

Mae'r mater hwn wedi arwain at gynnydd yn nifer y Banciau Bwyd ar draws Cymru.
