Obesity is a major public health concern.

Mae gordewdra yn fater sy'n achosi pryder mawr o ran iechyd y cyhoedd.

The proportion of overweight or obese adults in Wales has remained at 57% since 2008. This includes 22% of adults classed as obese with levels of obesity higher across all ages in the more deprived areas (Welsh Health Survey 2013).

Being overweight can increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, osteoarthritis, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers such as breast, colon and kidney cancer. These illnesses place a significant financial burden on services in Wales. individuals who are overweight or obese may also experience mental health problems and discrimination because of their weight.

Childhood Obesity

In a report published by Public Health Wales 26 per cent of five-year-old children in Wales have a BMI classified as unhealthy and 11.3 per cent were classified as obese.

Whilst health professionals find these statistics worrying they feel that there is time to address this through education and advice for families to make healthy lifestyle choices, ensuring that as a society the healthiest choices are also the easiest choices.

Mae cyfran yr oedolion sydd dros bwysau neu sy'n ordew yng Nghymru wedi aros ar 57% ers 2008. Mae hyn yn cynnwys 22% o oedolion sy'n cael eu hystyried yn ordew ac mae lefelau gordewdra yn uwch ar draws pob oedran yn yr ardaloedd mwyaf difreintiedig (Arolwg Iechyd Cymru 2013).

Mae bod yn ordew yn gallu cynyddu'r risg o afiechyd y galon, pwysedd gwaed uchel, afiechyd yr afu/iau, osteoarthritis, strôc, diabetes math 2, a rhai mathau o ganser fel canser y fron, y colon a'r arennau. Mae'r afiechydon hyn yn rhoi baich ariannol sylweddol ar wasanaethau yng Nghymru. Gall unigolion sydd dros bwysau neu sy'n ordew hefyd wynebu problemau iechyd meddwl a gwahaniaethu oherwydd eu pwysau.

Gwyliwch y fideos sy'n dangos yr ystadegau moel a'r effaith ar unigolion.

Gordewdra ymhlith Plant

Yn ôl adroddiad a gyhoeddwyd gan Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru mae gan 26 y cant o blant pump oed yng Nghymru BMI sy'n cael ei ystyried yn afiach ac roedd 11.3 y cant yn cael eu hystyried yn ordew.

Er bod yr ystadegau hyn yn achosi pryder i weithwyr iechyd proffesiynol maen nhw'n teimlo bod amser i ymdrin â hyn drwy addysg a rhoi cyngor i deuluoedd i wneud dewisiadau iach o ran eu ffordd o fyw, gan sicrhau mai'r dewsiadau iachaf yw'r dewisiadau mwyaf hawdd mewn cymdeithas hefyd.

Question 1

Cwestiwn 1

This graph shows the relationship between the consumption of fruit and vegetable being below national guidelines and the level of obesity in Wales. What links can you make?

Mae'r graff hwn yn dangos y berthynas rhwng bwyta llai o ffrwythau a llysiau na'r canllawiau cenedlaethol a lefel gordewdra yng Nghymru. Pa gysylltiadau allwch chi eu gwneud?

Graph showing Fruit & Veg consumption Graph showing Fruit & Veg consumption

Suggested response: The graph suggests that in 2018 around 70% of the population will not be eating the recommended amount of fresh fruit and vegetables.

This is linked to around 60% of the adult population being classed as clinically obese.

If the trend continues then by 2025 it is expected that the number of individuals eating the recommended amount of fruit and vegetables will have risen to just over 74% of the population, which will, in turn, lead to a rise in obesity levels to over 62%.

Ymateb awgrymedig: Mae'r graff yn awgrymu na fydd tua 70% o'r boblogaeth yn 2018 yn bwyta'r maint sy'n cael ei argymell o ffrwythau a llysiau ffres.

Mae hyn yn gysylltiedig â'r ffaith bod tua 60% o oedolion yn cael eu hystyried yn glinigol ordew.

Os bydd y duedd yn parhau yna erbyn 2025 disgwylir y bydd nifer yr unigolion nad ydyn nhw'n bwyta'r maint sy'n cael ei argymell o ffrwythau a llysiau wedi codi i ychydig dros 74% o'r boblogaeth, a bydd hyn, yn ei dro, yn arwain at gynnydd mewn lefelau gordewdra i dros 62%.

Question 2

Cwestiwn 2

Look at the graph. Research where these Health Boards cover. Which area of Wales is eating the healthiest diet and which the worst?

Edrychwch ar y graff. Ymchwiliwch i weld pa ardaloedd mae'r Byrddau Iechyd yn gyfrifol amdanyn nhw. Pa ardal yng Nghymru sy'n bwyta'r deiet mwyaf iach a pha un sy'n bwyta'r deiet gwaethaf?

% of adults eating five portions of fruit and vegetables the previous day, 2013-2014 Age-standardised, individuals aged 16+, Wales health boards

% yr oedolion wnaeth fwyta pum dogn o ffrwythau a llysiau y diwrnod blaenorol, 2013-2014 Safonedig yn ôl oedran, unigolion dros 16 oed, byrddau iechyd Cymru

Chart of % of adults eating five portions of fruit and vegetables the previous day, 2013-2014 Wales health boards Chart of % of adults eating five portions of fruit and vegetables the previous day, 2013-2014 Wales health boards

Suggested response: Individuals living in Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion seem to have the healthiest diet; the percentage of individuals eating a healthy diet is 3% higher than the national average.

The percentage of individuals living in the South Wales valleys eating the recommended amount of fresh fruit and vegetables is the lowest in Wales; the percentage of individuals eating a healthy diet is 5% lower than the national average.

Ateb awgrymedig: Mae'n ymddangos mai unigolion sy'n byw yn Sir Benfro a Cheredigion sydd â'r deiet mwyaf iach; mae canran yr unigolion sy'n bwyta deiet iach 3% yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol.

Yng nghymoedd De Cymru mae’r ganran leiaf o unigolion sy'n bwyta'r maint sy'n cael ei argymell o ffrwythau ffres a llysiau; mae canran yr unigolion sy'n bwyta deiet iach 5% yn is na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol.

Question 3

Cwestiwn 3

Look at the graph and find the health board that serves your area. What does this tell you about the health of individuals in your community?

Edrychwch ar y graff a chwiliwch am y bwrdd iechyd sy'n gwasanaethu eich ardal chi. Beth mae hyn yn ei ddweud wrthoch chi am iechyd unigolion yn eich cymuned chi?

% of adults obese or overweight (BMI*>=25), 2013-2014 Age-standardised, individuals aged 16+, Wales health boards

% yr oedolion gordew neu dros bwysau (BMI*>=25), 2013-2014 Safonedig yn ôl oedran, unigolion dros 16 oed, byrddau iechyd Cymru

Chart of % of adults obese or overweight (BMI*>=25), 2013-2014 Wales health boards Chart of % of adults obese or overweight (BMI*>=25), 2013-2014 Wales health boards

Suggested response:

Betsi Cadwaladr – Between 2013 and 2014, 56% of the population was classed as obese. More than half of the population are at risk of weight related illnesses. However, this area of Wales is 2% below the national average, so the issue for the health board isn’t as bad as it is for other health boards across Wales.

Powys - Between 2013 and 2014, 58% of the population was classed as obese. More than half of the population are at risk of weight related illnesses. This is the national average for the percentage of adults recorded as being obese.

Hywel Dda - Between 2013 and 2014, 58% of the population was classed as obese. More than half of the population are at risk of weight related illnesses. This is the national average for the percentage of adults recorded as being obese.

ABM - Between 2013 and 2014, 59% of the population was classed as obese. More than half of the population are at risk of weight related illnesses. This health board shows results that are just above the national average, which is 58%. This means that they will be under slightly more pressure than some other health boards in dealing with illnesses and conditions caused by weight issues.

Cardiff and Vale - Between 2013 and 2014, 54% of the population was classed as obese. Whilst more than half of the population are at risk of weight related illnesses, this health board has the lowest percentage of obese individuals in Wales. There will be less pressure on services having to deal with weight related illnesses and conditions, than there would be in other parts of Wales.

Cwm Taf - Between 2013 and 2014, 64% of the population was classed as obese. This is the highest percentage in Wales being 6% higher than the national average. There will be far more pressure on services having to deal with weight related illnesses and conditions, than there would be in other parts of Wales.

Aneurin Bevan - Between 2013 and 2014, 60% of the population was classed as obese. This is the second highest percentage in Wales being 2% higher than the national average. There will be more pressure on services having to deal with weight related illnesses and conditions, than there would be in other parts of Wales.

Ymateb awgrymedig: Betsi Cadwaladr – Rhwng 2013 a 2014, roedd 56% o'r boblogaeth yn cael ei hystyried yn ordew. Mae dros hanner y boblogaeth mewn perygl o ddioddef salwch sy'n gysylltiedig â phwysau. Fodd bynnag, mae'r ganran yn yr ardal hon o Gymru 2% yn is na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol, felly nid yw'n broblem mor fawr i'r bwrdd iechyd ag y mae i fyrddau iechyd eraill ar draws Cymru.

Powys – Rhwng 2013 a 2014, roedd 58% o'r boblogaeth yn cael ei hystyried yn ordew. Mae dros hanner y boblogaeth mewn perygl o ddioddef salwch sy'n gysylltiedig â phwysau. Dyma'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol ar gyfer canran yr oedolion a gofnodwyd fel rhai gordew.

Hywel Dda – Rhwng 2013 a 2014, roedd 58% o'r boblogaeth yn cael ei hystyried yn ordew. Mae dros hanner y boblogaeth mewn perygl o ddioddef salwch sy'n gysylltiedig â phwysau. Dyma'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol ar gyfer canran yr oedolion a gofnodwyd fel rhai gordew.

ABM – Rhwng 2013 a 2014, roedd 59% o'r boblogaeth yn cael ei hystyried yn ordew. Mae dros hanner y boblogaeth mewn perygl o ddioddef salwch sy'n gysylltiedig â phwysau. Mae canlyniadau'r bwrdd iechyd hwn ychydig yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol, sef 58%. Golyga hyn y bydd o dan ychydig mwy o bwysau na rhai byrddau iechyd eraill wrth ymdrin â salwch a chyflyrau sy'n cael eu hachosi gan faterion yn ymwneud â phwysau.

Caerdydd a'r Fro – Rhwng 2013 a 2014, roedd 54% o'r boblogaeth yn cael ei hystyried yn ordew. Er bod dros hanner y boblogaeth mewn perygl o ddioddef salwch sy'n gysylltiedig â phwysau, y bwrdd iechyd hwn sydd â'r ganran leiaf o unigolion ordew yng Nghymru. Bydd llai o bwysau ar wasanaethau i ymdrin â salwch a chyflyrau sy'n gysylltiedig â phwysau, nag y byddai mewn rhannau eraill o Gymru.

Cwm Taf - Rhwng 2013 a 2014, roedd 64% o'r boblogaeth yn cael ei hystyried yn ordew. Dyma'r ganran fwyaf yng Nghymru ac mae 6% yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol. Bydd llawer mwy o bwysau ar wasanaethau i ymdrin â salwch a chyflyrau sy'n gysylltiedig â phwysau, nag y byddai mewn rhannau eraill o Gymru.

Aneurin Bevan - Rhwng 2013 a 2014, roedd 60% o'r boblogaeth yn cael ei hystyried yn ordew. Dyma'r ganran ail fwyaf yng Nghymru ac mae 2% yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol. Bydd mwy o bwysau ar wasanaethau i ymdrin â salwch a chyflyrau sy'n gysylltiedig â phwysau, nag y byddai mewn rhannau eraill o Gymru.

Question 4

Cwestiwn 4

Study the graph. What does this tell you about children living in Flintshire compared to Blaenau Gwent?

Astudiwch y graff. Beth mae'n ei ddweud wrthoch chi am blant sy'n byw yn Sir y Fflint o'u cymharu â Blaenau Gwent?

Percentage of children who are aobese in Wales Percentage of children who are aobese in Wales

Suggested response: The percentage of obese 4 – 5 year-olds living in Flintshire is 1.5% below the national average, whilst in Blaenau Gwent the percentage is 2.7% higher than the national average. This tends to suggest that children in Flintshire have a healthier diet and are more active than those living in Blaenau Gwent. The issue in Blaenau Gwent is greater than in Flintshire and if the obesity problem is not tackled then this may lead to a greater strain on services with these children suffering weight related illnesses and conditions in adult life.

Ymateb awgrymedig: Mae canran y plant gordew 4 – 5 oed sy'n byw yn Sir y Fflint 1.5% yn is na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol, ond ym Mlaenau Gwent mae'r ganran 2.7% yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol. Mae hyn yn tueddu i awgrymu bod gan blant yn Sir y Fflint ddeiet mwy iach a'u bod yn fwy actif na'r plant sy'n byw ym Mlaenau Gwent. Mae'r broblem yn fwy ym Mlaenau Gwent nag yn Sir y Fflint ac os na fydd sylw yn cael ei roi i broblem gordewdra yna gall hyn arwain at fwy o straen ar wasanaethau a bydd y plant hyn yn dioddef o salwch a chyflyrau sy'n gysylltiedig â phwysau pan fyddan nhw'n oedolion.

Question 5

Cwestiwn 5

Now study these maps side by side. What do they tell us about the potential future obesity problem in your area?

Yn awr astudiwch y mapiau hyn ochr yn ochr. Beth maen nhw'n ei ddweud wrthoch chi am broblem bosibl gordewdra yn y dyfodol yn eich ardal chi?

Graph showing Overweight and obese adults in Wales Graph showing Overweight and obese adults in Wales
Graph showing Overweight and obese Children in Wales Graph showing Overweight and obese adults in Wales

Suggested response:

Betsi Cadwaladr - While the current adult obesity rate is below the national average, the childhood obesity rate is slightly higher at 0.3% over the national average. This means that the health board needs to encourage families to adopt a more healthy lifestyle in order to avoid greater adult obesity problems in the future.

Powys – While the adult obesity rate is at the national average, the childhood obesity rate is currently at 1.1% below. If this trend continues then there will potentially be less obese adults in the future and therefore less demands on the health board.

Hywel Dda - While the adult obesity rate is at the national average, the childhood obesity rate is currently at 0.9% above. This means that the health board needs to encourage families to adopt a more healthy lifestyle in order to avoid greater adult obesity problems in the future.

ABM – The adult obesity rate is 1% higher than the national average and similarly the childhood obesity rate currently stands at 0.7% above the national average. Whilst there is a slight drop between the adult and child percentages, they are both still above the national average. The health needs to encourage families to adopt a more healthy lifestyle in order to reduce the adult obesity problems in the future.

Cardiff and Vale – Both the adult and childhood obesity levels are below the national average. However, while adult obesity is 4% below average, childhood obesity is only 2.4% below. If the health board doesn’t address this trend, then there will be more obese adults than at present putting a greater strain on health services.

Cwm Taf – Both the adult and childhood obesity levels are above the national average. However, while the adult obesity rate is 6% above average, childhood obesity is only 2% above the national average. This means that healthy liefstyle programmes are potentially having a positive effect on the population. The health board should continue to work with families to continue to reduce the trend in obesity levels.

Aneurin Bevan – While the adult obesity level is 2% above the national average the childhood obesity levels currently fall below the national average by 0.6%. If this trend continues then there will potentially be less obese adults in the future and therefore less demands on the health board.

Ymateb awgrymedig:

Betsi Cadwaladr - Er bod cyfradd bresennol yr oedolion gordew yn is na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol, mae cyfradd y plant gordew ychydig yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol, sef 0.3%. Golyga hyn fod angen i'r bwrdd iechyd annog teuluoedd i fabwysiadu ffordd o fyw mwy iach er mwyn osgoi mwy o broblemau gordewdra ymhlith oedolion yn y dyfodol.

Powys - Er bod cyfradd yr oedolion gordew yr un peth â'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol, mae cyfradd y plant gordew 1.1% yn is. Os bydd y duedd hon yn parhau yna mae'n bosibl bydd llai o oedolion gordew yn y dyfodol ac felly llai o alw ar y bwrdd iechyd.

Hywel Dda - Er bod cyfradd yr oedolion gordew yr un peth â'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol, mae cyfradd y plant gordew 0.9% yn uwch ar hyn o bryd. Golyga hyn fod angen i'r bwrdd iechyd annog teuluoedd i fabwysiadu ffordd o fyw mwy iach er mwyn osgoi mwy o broblemau gordewdra ymhlith oedolion yn y dyfodol.

ABM – Mae cyfradd yr oedolion gordew 1% yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol ac yn yr un modd mae cyfradd y plant gordew 0.7% yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol ar hyn o bryd. Er bod cwymp bach rhwng canrannau'r oedolion a'r plant, maen nhw'n dal i fod yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol. Mae angen i'r bwrdd iechyd annog teuluoedd i fabwysiadu ffordd o fyw mwy iach er mwyn osgoi mwy o broblemau gordewdra ymhlith oedolion yn y dyfodol.

Caerdydd a'r Fro – Mae lefelau gordewdra ymhlith oedolion a phlant yn is na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol. Fodd bynnag, er bod nifer yr oedolion gordew 4% yn is na'r cyfartaledd, mae gordewdra ymhlith plant 2.4% yn unig yn is na'r cyfartaledd. Os na fydd y bwrdd iechyd yn mynd i'r afael â'r duedd hon, yna bydd mwy o oedolion gordew nag sydd ar hyn o bryd gan roi mwy o straen ar wasanaethau iechyd.

Cwm Taf – Mae lefelau gordewdra ymhlith oedolion a phlant yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol. Fodd bynnag, er bod y gyfradd oedolion gordew 6% yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd, mae gordewdra ymhlith plant 2% yn unig yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol. Golyga hyn fod rhaglenni ffordd o fyw iach o bosibl yn cael effaith gadarnhaol ar y boblogaeth. Dylai'r bwrdd iechyd barhau i weithio gyda theuluoedd er mwyn parhau i ostwng y duedd hon yn lefelau gordewdra.

Aneurin Bevan – Er bod yr oedolion gordew 2% yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol, mae lefelau gordewdra ymhlith plant 0.6% yn is na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol ar hyn o bryd. Os bydd y duedd hon yn parhau yna mae'n bosibl bydd llai o oedolion gordew yn y dyfodol ac felly llai o alw ar y bwrdd iechyd.
