Data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) shows that out of a population of 3.1 million, over 800,000 people in Wales are aged 60 and over, and that around a third of these are at least 75 years old.

Mae data o'r Swyddfa Ystadegau Gwladol (SYG) yn dangos, o boblogaeth o 3.1 miliwn, bod dros 800,000 o bobl yng Nghymru yn 60 oed a throsodd, a bod tua traean o'r rhain yn 75 oed o leiaf.

Senior man and woman

The ONS predicts that the number of over 65s will continue to rise in future years.

People living longer means that more individuals will need care and support because of failing physical health and frailty in old age as well as mental health conditions including dementia.

The increasing demands on the health and social care sectors will put extra pressure on their resources.

The Strategy for Older People in Wales 2013 -2023 aims to ensure that health, well-being and independence are a priority.

The Older People’s Commissioner for Wales’ quality of life model states that in order for older individuals to lead lives that have value, meaning and purpose they need:

  • to feel safe and be listened to, valued and respected
  • to be able to get the help they need, when they need it, in the way that they want it
  • to live in a place that suits them and their lives
  • to be able to do the things that matter to them.

Mae'r Swyddfa Ystadegau Gwladol yn rhagweld bydd nifer y bobl dros 65 oed yn parhau i godi yn y blynyddoedd i ddod.

Mae'r ffaith bod pobl yn byw yn hŷn yn golygu bydd angen mwy o ofal a chymorth ar unigolion wrth i’w hiechyd corfforol ddirywio a mynd yn fwy bregus wrth heneiddio, ynghyd â chyflyrau iechyd meddwl gan gynnwys dementia.

Bydd y galw cynyddol ar y sectorau iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol yn rhoi pwysau ychwanegol ar eu hadnoddau.

Mae'r Strategaeth ar gyfer Pobl Hŷn yng Nghymru 2013 - 2023 yn ceisio sicrhau bod iechyd, llesiant ac annibyniaeth yn flaenoriaeth.

Yn ôl model ansawdd bywyd Comisiynydd Pobl Hŷn Cymru, er mwyn i unigolion hŷn fyw bywydau sydd â gwerth, ystyr a phwrpas mae angen y canlynol arnyn nhw:

  • teimlo'n ddiogel a bod rhywun yn gwrando arnyn nhw ac yn eu gwerthfawrogi a'u parchu
  • gallu cael yr help sydd ei angen arnyn nhw, pan fo'i angen arnyn nhw, yn y ffordd y maen nhw ei eisiau
  • byw mewn man sy'n addas ar eu cyfer nhw a'u bywydau
  • gallu gwneud y pethau sy'n bwysig iddyn nhw.

Question 5

Cwestiwn 5

This bar graph shows the average weekly income of couples and single pensioners. What does it tell you about pensioners in Wales and what impact would this have?

Mae'r graff bar hwn yn dangos incwm cyfartalog wythnosol pensiynwyr sengl a chyplau. Beth mae'n ei ddweud wrthoch chi am bensiynwyr yng Nghymru a pha effaith fyddai hyn yn ei gael?

Graph showing average weekly income of couples and single pensioners Graph showing average weekly income of couples and single pensioners
Source: Department of work and pensionsFfynhonnell: Adran Gwaith a Phensiynau

Suggested response: Pensioners in Wales have the lowest weekly income in Britain. This would mean that pensioners in Wales are less able to eat healthily and partake in activities that enhance their health and well-being as pensioners in England.

Ymateb awgrymedig: Incwm wythnosol pensiynwyr yng Nghymru yw’r isaf ym Mhrydain. Byddai hyn yn golygu bod pensiynwyr yng Nghymru yn llai abl i fwyta'n iach a chymryd rhan mewn gweithgareddau sy'n gwella eu hiechyd a'u llesiant na phensiynwyr yn Lloegr.
